she said she was good for now, but do you at least know when the next bus is coming? I answered and that was that.

I thought for a few minutes before asking. It was at night and I normally wouldn't care, but it was warm and very quiet and we were both going to be there a while so I thought I would break the ice. then other people showed up and it felt less tense.

but I knew and I knew she didn't know what with how intently she was studying the schedule near the stop. also it's not a conversation starter. it's a yes or no question.

Honestly what was the point of posting this? Were you looking for praise? Or, like, advice on what to do next time youre in a situation like this?

Someone might find it humorous. Also I'm not sure if it was a faux pas. I spend a lot of time at stops, though, and I'm getting impatient with how boring it is.

You met an anti-social person at a public bus stop. Nothing unusual. No one's entitled to conversation.

Also, don't ask for permission to "converse" with someone, even a stranger. It's awkward and adding an unnecessary step 99.9% of the time. Pretentious people pressuring you to respect such a silly restrictive rule are hypocrites who don't hesitate to blabber at anyone they please. In other words: rules for you, none for them. It's mostly dependent on whether or not they like you. When they don't, they don't want you talking to them, period. But you're not a supervillain for trying to open up chat at least once. That's just being human...

Some people are confident enough they don't mind striking up friendly conversation with strangers at a transit stop. Some other people are just more sensitive about it choosing not to...and that generally is the issue with them: sensitivity. Whether it's them being comparatively less of a social butterfly, had bad past experiences, or they're just clumsy at convo...they have an exposed nerve that apparently you don't.

Don't feel bad about that. Feel empowered.

You met a seemingly anti-social person at a public bus stop. Nothing unusual. No one's entitled to conversation.

However, don't ask for permission to simply "converse" with someone, even a stranger. Just attempt to open dialogue, and when they decide to refuse...respect that. Simple. You're not oppressing them. They still have the right to opt out when uninterested. Begging for permission just to talk in the first place is awkward, self-defeating, and adding an unnecessary step 99.9% of the time. It's being TOO polite. Pretentious people pressuring you to respect such a silly restrictive rule of "consent" are typically hypocrites who do not hesitate to blabber at anyone they please. In other words: rules for you, none for them. And it's often superficially dependent on whether or not they like you. When they don't, they don't want you talking to them, period. Whether it's them being comparatively less of a social butterfly, unable to move past bad experiences, or they're just clumsy at convo...they have an exposed nerve that apparently you don't.

Don't feel bad about that. Feel empowered.

I can't believe it took so long for someone to say this. Like seriously don't ask permission to talk.

The correct answer is you spit none in these situations. If you aren't in a situation which has the presupposition of being social, in all likelihood the person just wants everyone to mind their own business.
