How is it that we, as a country, running out of money in social security when everyones paying a whopping 12.4% of their income into this? Seriously screw that; Id rather I get that 12.4% and I save it myself.

Whats ridiculous is it being capped at a certain maximum. If you got rid of the cap, youd be able to lower the rate.

The program was never designed or meant to last indefinitely, nor did the boomers care when they burdened the next handful of generations ahead of them towards funding it.

It's because if you make over a certain amount, you can't pay any more in. It's bullshit.

We aren't, it caps out at around $130,000 so anyone making any more than that is only paying 12.4% on the first $130,000 and then 0$ on the rest.

Isn't regressive taxation great?

It's seems rather pointless to me. At some point the system is going to crash. You may as well choice to be financially independent from the government.

You don't like paying money into a social program that almost certainly will be defunct by the time it's your turn to benefit from it?

I mean, just calling it a Ponzi scheme would have sufficed. And with investing becoming accessible to all, and 401ks a common benefit now SS theres little reason why it shouldn't be getting phased out.
