Who cares if we look like villians to the rest of the world. This is the best option to keep US soldiers and innocent Afghanistan citizens safe. Better than just leaving, and allowing this shit to happen.

Problem with the US is that they don't kill prisoners or people surrendering.

China would not launch WW3 over the Taliban. I doubt they see the Taliban and Afghanistan in general as worth the trouble.

If you want to start WW3 with China, mess with their territory or what they see as their territory. The US sending in troops to liberate Hong Kong would likely do it.

Just like the Vietcong did in Vietnam, the Taliban can just take off their gear and blend in with locals and live their lives. They can hide in plain sight with little inconvenience.

The only way for the taliban to die is an ideological revolution (possibly bolstered by an actual revolution given current circumstances) that completely rejects everything they're peddling. The United States cannot help much with that at all.
