I've been out to parts of it on the job and on roadtrips and there's miles of nothingness in some of these places. I've seen houses that are like 30+ minutes away from the nearest store or strip mall. No wonder all kids do out there is hunt or smoke meth >_> There isn't much else to do lol

Any rural CEmen here? What's it really like? do you enjoy it or wish you lived somewhere busier

It's nice that things are more of a laid back pace but it wasn't for me. I prefer the tempo of the city. Rural internet is slow af and everybody in town wants to nose in on all your personal drama. The best thing I ever did was move back to the city.

I'm a partial shut-in, so as long as it has high-speed internet I probably wouldn't mind living there so much. The only things I would miss are good fast food places and suburban architecture. Rural architecture is fugly.

Well I'm in a rural area of Canada. I've lived here 26 years and honestly it's driving me nuts.

I live directly next to my old high school. The local pool and fitness center is under it. Across the way past the tennis court is a church. Otherwise within walking distance of my house is a gas station, auto-repair and car parts store, motel, and golf course with restaurant.

It's an 8min drive to the downtown area with grocery store, pharmacy, liquor store, bank, post office and more. Taking another road leads to the landfill, and various lakes among other places.

I'm not really into hiking or fishing. We have no public transit. The pizzeria doesn't deliver (pick-up only unless you're a senior). The nearest theater is a 35min drive away and they typically air only one movie a week. All my friends live in the city.

I grew up in an area that was maybe 15 minutes from town. We only had one neighbor who was an old couple and no other houses within viewing distance. The house was surrounded by fields and woods behinds the fields.

I loved it. We had all kinds of animals and miles of roads where we rode our bikes with next to no traffic. It was quiet and you could go outside without worrying about some neighbor being out there trying to small talk or some shit.

I live in a town now and fucking hate it. I wish I never moved here. Neighbors are nosy gossiping assholes. I can't stand going out in my own yard to do anything.

tldr: People suck.

I'm pretty rural. I LOVE it. Fuzzies everywhere, can do whatever the hell I want when I want, and mostly peaceful and quiet

I will say that you kinda have to rely on yourself during emergencies. Ambulance and police can take a while to get here. That's why guns are a big thing in the country

I moved from a big city to a small town about 8 years ago, and now I live in a super rural area. It's about 10 minutes to the closest store and gas station. Though I am only a mile from a major highway. There are only about 3 house in a half mile radius of me. I like living here. Even though we are so spread out the sense of community is great. Living here is pretty cheap too. I got a 1,200 sq ft house on an acre of land for $125k. Thankfully I can get fast internet here, its a little pricey, but not too bad.
You have to consider the positives of living in a rural area, like I never have to deal with traffic ever.

Also, this is what its like living in the middle of nowhere.

I don't think I really could either. I'm too used to my restaurants, mostly. And when I do want to buy something, shop or do something entertaining, I have access to pretty much just about anything within a 5 or 10 minute drive.

However, if I had the money, I would buy a second (or third) home somewhere that is relatively isolated (15+ minute drive even to get into a small town). I like the peace and tranquility from time to time and when you have your own land away from other neighbors, you're free to do anything. Shoot guns, go four wheeling, dirt biking, build fires, etc.

I grew up in rural America. I was 30 minutes to the nearest walmart and an hour to the nearest city. I didn't have internet until I went to college. There are definitely downsides. But there are good things too. Space, quiet, etc.

Also, there are stereotypes that are 100 percent true. We like cheap beer, trucks, and guns because there isn't anything else to do for fun out there. And yes, there is an opioid issue. And yes, there are trailer parks... and the occasional KKK gathering (that isn't nearly as prevelant as most of you would think).

The white supremacy groups tend to prey on the poorest white people that are looking for people to blame for their situation.

I miss parts of the country but do love the suburbs and being fairly close to things now.

For some it's just a vacation area or a place to get away.

Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina has like multi-million dollar mansions built up in or on the side of a mountain.

For regular and poor people the land they live on is usually inherited or has been owned for like 200 years.

Ive lived deep rural and major metropolitan and while I live in one, I usually miss the other.

Rural: Cleaner air, quieter, nature, darker nights, can have indoor/outdoor petsa whole bunch of positives.

City: Food, art, shopping, people watching, city lights, quick access to dang near anythinga whole bunch of positives.

Theyre both awesome and they both suck for different reasons.

I have it good I guess. I live in a rural town. So as a town I still have stores resturaunts etc. But avoid the higher crime rates the noise and all the shit I hate about cities.

I think the best set up is when I lived about 45 minutes out of Raleigh NC. Got all the perks of rural life but if I wanted to go clubbing or to a mall etc. A city wasnt too far away.

I grew up 40 minutes from a city of 35k, 22 minutes to a city of 12k. There was a convenience store 1 mile away, a grocery store 2 miles away, a gas station 2 miles away. Schools were 3-5 miles away. Couldn't get cable in my area, had to get Dish.

On my street, 5 acres was the minimum lot size allowed. My parents had 5 acres, neighbors north had 5 acres, neighbor west had 20 acres, neighbor east had 40 acres, neighbor south had 640 acres, which was a dairy farm.

There was a small creek on the 40 acre / 640 acre neighbor who would let me walk through their fields whenever i wanted. There was also a large river at the far end of the 640 acres. After the river was several thousand acres of DNR land on a hill side they are afraid could collapse if developed.

I built dams and swim holes in the creek, rope swings, etc. the river we would raft and canoe, fish (creek too but it sucked). Would go hunting and camping in the DNR land.

I built an epic 3 story tree fort with 2 bridges to other areas and a one way elevator that worked for maybe 6 months and a water balloon catapult that could reach the other side of the property.

I got to drive quads and dirt bikes and go-karts all the time. We had a trampoline, a "basketball court" (about 80' long piece of concrete but only 12' wide IIRC, only 1 10' hoop, mounted on a wooden pole that shook easily in the wind), a swimming pool (above ground but we dug about 4' in to the ground for about 8' deep). I had friends with pool tables, foosball, air hockey, slot cars, etc. all within like 2 miles.

In high school I got into paintball and with my friends we had like 10 places we would play woodsball.

If you're super poor rural is worse than urban I think.
If you have land and a bit of money though, rural can be a lot of fun at all ages I think. If I had land I could have a giant shop, a 4 car garage, room to park RV/ Boat, maybe areas to shoot, etc.

I'm looking in north olympia now, though. Can get 5-10 acres for under $700k with a nice house and only be 5-10 minutes from olympia.

When I lived in Baton Rouge, we were usually about thirty minutes away from town. I grew up hating it because my friends at school could ride bikes to each others houses and stuff, but now I really miss having privacy. I could play instruments at concert volume or even go outside and shoot a gun.

depends on what you want out of the setting. in my neck of the woods you pretty much need to be very outdoors-y. hiking, camping, sports shooting, hunting, skiing/showmobiling, swimming, fishing, kayaking, gardening ect. or be the more creative type and try homesteading of which theres a million things to keep you busy in alone. theres actualy a LOT of things to keep you occupied, but its not the lifestyle for everyone.

I find it funny in my neck of the woods teens go hang out in the walmart parking lot. Seemingly trying to show off their rides. Seen them a few times even bring corn hole boards and play that in the parking lot.

I find it odd my town has a law against cruising aka joyriding. Like how is that even enforced?
