As long as they do a good job, I don't care. Netflix kind of has a bad habit butchering some live action stuff so I hope it is at least watchable and not Death Note bad or whatever that modern day Avatar series is going to be.

I have been playing games or watching movies of RE since the beginning. So for me, making significant changes to integral characters is jarring. But congrats for being quick to throw around insults like racist.

The double standards I see are disappointing, but never surprising.

This is a good point. btw, Sheva is one of my favourite characters of the whole series. If they'd got a white girl to play her, I would be complaining. That's because I try and be consistent because having double standards is a really bad look.

But I'm more curious what people would think if they replaced Marvin with a white guy? Or Sheva with a white woman? Josh with a white dude? Would anyone be offended? I'd fucking hate it myself, but I like things to stay accurate to the source material as much as possible in terms of casting.

Surely you choose actors who look similar to the original character first, and then audition from those. You know, sex, age, body shape (ie. athletic), and yes, race too. Otherwise why not just have a fat old man audition for the role of Jill?

Because, historically speaking, black characters used to be played by white people in make up, which kept black people out of plays/movies, which fits into the whole system of oppression.

I almost always prefer as close an adaption as possible to the character unless there is some compelling reason to change their appearance.

I don't see a compelling reason here, and the actress is not anything special.

That being said, Resident Evil has a lot more significant problems as a movie franchise than Jill Valentine being black.

but let me ask you this. Let's say they left Jill white and created a brand new character named Fred or Sally. They are a POC and they made them super broken. Just wrecks house. Makes Leon/Claire/Jill/Wesker all look like jokes. They aren't written amazingly well or that bad. Would you be ok with it or would you still say "oh look they are pandering"? Would it be ok then or would you just rather them have Jill be black?

Similar. Jill is a young white woman - well, she was. It's also from the mid 1990s when America was different, so it should stay faithful to the era. Changing everything to look like it's 2021 is unfaithful to the story. I am disappointed but it's Netflix so what do we expect.

Why are you presenting a false dichotomy that the only options are a well-written resident evil movie with a black Jill and a dumpster fire resident evil movie with an original character? Those aren't the only options at all.

The difference is that historically minorities weren't considered for ANY roles while white people were playing roles for minorities. This was as prevalent as a few years ago.

Essentially it was 99/1 in favor of white actors for roles. Now its 90/10 and you guys are whining about it.

I wouldn't like badly written Mary Sue's regardless of pandering. I didn't like Alice, and I think Milla is a decent actress, even if she had decent ideas behind her at first.

I would see any sort of race swap as frustrating or annoying. It's just, for the most part, it's white characters being replaced with black characters.

You really didn't answer my question though. Would you be fine with Marvin/Sheva/Josh being white?
