In short, ocean hypoxia is when theres a low concentration of oxygen in water, which is caused by a lower solubility spurned on by heat and poor circulation (stagnant water). This in turn is causing "dead zones" in the ocean where marine life either swims away and is fine, or cant, and straight up suffocates.
It's basically a wildfire, but for water environments and without the regenerative effects afterwords. This effect was first noticed to be increasing in 2002, but its been getting worse ever since, and with the near collapse of thermohaline circulation (ie, ocean currents) as of late, its likely to start getting exponential with the Indian Ocean to be the first to see large effects as its heating up faster than the other oceans are. These issues are going to cause a lot of famine and food insecurities as time goes on, and coastlines are going to be hit hard. And thats before we even get into the weather, which as we're already seeing is going to go nuts. But of course, this is all mumbo jumbo. Lets do the pop-up book version. This is what the ocean current in question is supposed to look like: The movement of surface and deep ocean water helps to keep the oceans non-stagnant and at a stable temperature to support life. This is what this current looks like right now: The water isnt circulating the way its supposed to, and pockets are getting stuck at various places along the currents path. https://earth.nullschool.net/#2021/06/02/0000Z/ocean/surface/currents/ You can use the above link; it has animation as well to get an idea of whats actually moving. You can also go back to 2013 and see how its degrading. The highlighted areas are getting bigger with less movement. Suffice to say, not good. Hopefully we'll be carbon neutral 30 years from now. Thatll fix this somehow... --- I shouldnt be approaching 30 and preparing for life as a climate refugee. ... Copied to Clipboard!
