I love speedrunning but I can't honestly say that I ever really enjoy these videos. They always feel like:

This guy got the record in June 2011
But then this guy got a new record in July 2011
Then this guy got a record in September 2011
But then a new trick was discovered and the first guy got a record in January 2012
And then this guy got a record in March 2012

Like I appreciate what he's doing and I'm glad that people enjoy these videos but I really don't get it.

I think it's because he is telling a story that might otherwise be lost to time.

It seems like a ton of research goes into each video to collect the chapters of information from either those who were involved first hand or who were close enough to the scene to provide reliable information.

Yeah the actual record progression itself follows a fairly predictable blueprint, but it paints a picture that otherwise would not exist. Even the people the video is about won't have the full picture, only their personal experiences for their contribution of the canvas.

Yeah, these videos are the tale of how the speedrun evolved. It's not just the time got reduced here and then it got reduced there, its the story of who came up with this trick or who found that glitch. It's a chance to chronicle how several people contributed to making it possible for one person to hit that high mark. Sometimes the people who get acknowledged in SS's videos never even held the record themselves, they just did the leg work to teach the community new way to save time. The record holder didn't come up with the whole speedrun on their own, and it's really cool that other people are getting credit for their contribution

i don't think does justice to SS's videos, at least the later ones. he also provides background information on the general speedrunning scene of a game and who certain speedrunners are and their importance to the speedrunning community (like darbian, for instance). and his videos have great music. i think they're very informative and entertaining.

Yeah it seems weird that he mentions that there were cheated records for much of the timeline and then ignored that fact for the rest of the video.

Like i get not giving cheaters attention but it was part of the story, like it or not.

There are other big name YouTubers who special in cheated speedrunner content, probably just trying not to overlap.

The thing that always gets me good with the videos is that SS's buildup to someone being on a perfect run and then "all they had to do....was BLANK" is completely identical whether the person is about to botch it or take it, so it's always, like, full suspense when he cuts to the footage afterwards.

not sure why SS would worry about overlap, there's tons of people who watch him but not other youtubers who make similar content (like, say, karl jobst). it's easy to see when you look at the views their respective channels get.

plus there already is overlap anyway. like SS, jobst has also made several super mario bros. videos, for example.

i agree that it would be nice to see some other games. i do find some of his videos more interesting than others

the ones where i feel like i'm learning about a new game's subculture, the foibles of a game's engine, and the various ways people learned how to break it are more interesting than the sequential "and then X got the record. and then Y got the record."

my other criticism is that he uses the same music over and over in every single video, the same exact speech patterns, etc etc

but i recognize it's a useless criticism- he's extremely successful and if he switches up the formula (by going non-nintendo, by mixing up the music, etc etc) he risks poisoning the well

i'm honestly surprised he hasn't gone for any of the 3d zelda games (specifically OoT) yet. it's nintendo, and the ways that they've broken those games is really impressive

3d Zelda games would be logical not only because they are on par with mario games in terms of having a consistent speedrunning community but because there should be enough surviving information available to piece the stories together.

I imagine with some of the smaller titles the ratio of searching effort to information found makes them not viable.

I wish there was more attention paid to glitchless stuff, but I know that that's not what most people want to see. Seeing how the glitches work is cool, but I'm more impressed by a glitchless run, then say ramming into a wall in Choco Mountain for days on end.

Mario 1 is kind of close to that, since the glitches there are pretty much to skip animations and stuff, not to really bypass anything you have to "do."

That's the nice thing about competitive speedrunning. There's no practical difference between a glitched and glitchless run. No matter what crazy glitches you figure out, you still have to execute perfectly. If you spend hours figuring out a new trick that saves time, another player can just copy the tactic

Zooming in on a specific period of fierce competition without new glitches or tactics being discovered can be interesting, though

The whole process does seem to be divided into two phases- "bulking" by discovering new tactics, and "cutting" by practicing and perfecting execution

The real origin of the joke, though, is from the history of Contra, in which Matt Turk makes a surprising return. That's where the gag of "and his name... is Matt Turk" comes from, since he was already such a central figure before, it was surprising to see him again.
