match you against bots without letting you know they're there?

I've noticed more and more online multiplayer games slipping bots into matches, without any indication in-game that bots are a possible feature.

It was looked down on when various .io games were exposed as not requiring an internet connection to play, but only a few years later it seems to have made it into the mainstream

I bring up the topic because a couple of my friends and I have come into disagreement. They got angry at me for revealing the new game we were playing matches you against bots until you had a certain number of matches under your belt. I discovered this by googling after a match with some suspect opponents

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

This was actually the game that sparked this topic. I think it's deceptive and crosses the line ethically. I would have been okay with it if it was announced and only below level 10 and/or only in unranked games.

I kind of appreciate the feature in smaller BR games like Super Animal Royale that might keep you waiting forever if not for the bots, but they should still be open about it!

I think it's ok for new players and in games that don't impact any sort of ranking or achievement that is viewable by other players

That first time I played PUBG on my phone and I had like 10 kills, I knew something was fishy.
Then never played it again.

I'd prefer to know, but sometimes seeing a bunch of bots can take some of the stakes away, because who cares. I get why they are used, so matchmaking won't take forever if nobody with a similar connection is around...but still.

You know, it took me a while to realize that Smash Ultimate uses bots online without telling you. If you ever play Tournament mode online, and you see opponents with generic human names like Ashley, Sebastian, Chris, Haley, etc.; 95% of the time that is a bot. You can tell if they exit their side of the results screen at the same time, and you can confirm it when you see you gained no Smash Tag with that name.

since i mostly play games that don't have active playerbases in my region i generally do like the presence bots (even if it'd be nicer if the games i'm mostly thinking of just had properly outlined single player content to begin with)

there's one game in particular where if anything i'm more bothered to face actual people, since it usually takes nearly an entire offline round (5ish minutes) before i connect and it's just super laggy to the point of sometimes being unplayable. i've had times where i've even disconnected while waiting to return to the menu after the results screen and subsequently had more points deducted from my record than i gained from the win by failing to reconnect...

games like that with shit netcode really need bot matches to compensate lol

I don't really mind, but I wish they didn't try to hide it with fake gamer tags.

I can't believe 27% are going with "it's terrible, I hate playing against bots online!"

We're not in the age of Quake and Counter-Strike and Brood War anymore- gamers are spread way too thin over thousands of games, anything online multi needs an AI option because it's almost impossible to fill lobbies in a reasonable timeframe 24 hours a day. If someone tries their first round and the game takes 10+ minutes trying to find enough opponents, they'll quit out and never return and the game will be dead in a month. (We see this all the time with ambitious Virtual Reality games, for instance.)

I understand not liking games that hide the AI aspect, but having it as an option for low level/non-ranked play is essential.

Why? They play better than about half of red rank teammates. They'll at least do a generator and come for a save.

As opposed to people who just DC the instant they get downed?

Mobile version already has bots.

I am fine with bots, even online, but I don't think it's great to not somehow convey that you're playing against bots.

When you say your friends got mad at you, are they mad that you broke the illusion? That's not...really something they should be getting mad at you for imo, if they want to feel better about themselves and think they're clubbing seals then that's a them problem

Ive never played mobile, but yeah the people who rage on the first down are ass. How are the bots on mobile? Are there killer and survivor bots?

Its even dumber since the bots are only there while you are still new!
