As good as Star Wars gets really. While the presentation can be lacking, it makes up for with great use of Star Wars lore, excellent, memorable cast, and a timeless twist.

I think this game gets a lot of leeway because it's a Star Wars story that isn't dumb, and those are in short supply. Change the name and gave the setting a different coat of paint and people would like it much less.

Yes, the story would get a lower score with a worse setting.

I'd rate plenty of Star Wars stories highly though. Having a great setting goes a long way.

I do kind of wonder how well this would hold up for me today. The twist also got me even though it really probably shouldn't have. I much prefer KotOR2's take on the setting but KotOR is a great straightforward take of it.

Aside from the one (awesome) twist the story is pretty by the numbers. Cool idea, a couple of cool characters (but an uneven cast overall), the Sith Academy planet was ridiculous and fun, but a lot of the game felt pretty generic to me. Really weak ending too. I imagine I'm not as high on it as others because I only played it for the first time a couple of years ago and can see Bioware's usual stock tropes and narrative structure in full effect here. The twist is really good though, beyond the shock factor you can see what they were going for with the questions of redemption and nature/nurture etc. Glad I played it!

This was the first non-Pokemon RPG I ever beat. I played the living hell out of it, exhausting all dialogue options and immersing myself in the world completely. I felt the story was excellent in and of itself, but when I remember that this game released while George Lucas was spewing out the prequel trilogy (this was at least a decade before those films came to be re-evaluated with memetic fondness), it makes it all the more special.

KotOR was the most "Star Wars" thing of that era.
