I would..

you'd be surprised at how often cashiers can forget to ring something in yet people say NOTHING and just take it with them like nothing happened even though they got it for free..though it won't work for electronics but often people get away with it with household items or food.

So if a cashier forgot to ring something up for you, would you say something and pay for it or say nothing and take it for free? let's see what people will pick....

If I noticed it, I'd say something. I have however gotten out of a store without realizing they forgot to ring something up, and didn't go back. I felt bad about it, but was afraid of what would happen if I went back in and said they forgot to ring it up.

Say something, though I can't recall if this exact thing has ever happened to me.

Something similar did. I was buying some stuff from a small-time card shop, and the cashier/owner did the math incorrectly and undercharged me. I corrected him, and he was so appreciative of my honesty that he actually gave me a *bigger* discount than I would have gotten had I stayed quiet. It was like a scene out of a hokey kids show.

The only time I ever really pay attention to the cashier scanning things is if I'm expecting some kind of big discount/sale and want to make sure it comes off the total, otherwise I don't think I ever pay enough attention to the process to notice if something didn't scan or not. If the total they charge me is just a little bit cheaper than I was expecting I usually chalk it up to some sale going on that I was unaware of.

I guess in the hypothetical situation where I noticed I'd say something.

The amount of times I've later noticed that they didn't ring up an item is balanced out by the amount of times I later noticed that they rang me up twice for one item. It all works out.

Unless I'm grocery shopping (where there can be variance due to the weight of items) I will typically know what I expect my total (after tax) to be within a few cents and if my total is ever different from that expectation I'll say something. With groceries I have a ballpark and I'll speak up if I end up an unusual amount over. This might happen if the cashier punches in the wrong item code on a bulk item that is being weighed such as ringing up 5 lbs of peanuts as 5 lbs of cashews which would cost over 3x as much. If my total is a bit low I'll chalk it up to good fortune and say nothing. The very last reason I would ever want to hold up a checkout line at a grocery store would be to ask them to charge me more money.

assuming this is like a major chain grocery store. A local business I would always say something, totally different situation

Cashier I might relent.

But similar(And maybe more common?) circumstance I've had blackjack dealers in casinos make mistakes and when they are in my favor I will say nothing and give no reaction to indicate something might be amiss. Opposite if they make an error that would cost me, get that corrected right away.

Will give them a larger tip when I leave though.

I generally have a good idea of what my purchases cost. If it is over or under by a good chunk I would bring it up.

Ha yeah. That happened to me at work once when I noticed my check was too big and told the boss and he let me keep the money. It was pretty wild.

I actually did go back in once and the customer service person just looked at me like I was crazy.

as someone who worked in a grocery store before if anyone came back to pay for an item I'd assume they were flaunting their money and their willingness to part with it in front of us poor grocery store workers

One time a lady came to return some items. They were shrink wrapped together and the cashier only rang up one of them. The lady through a hissy fit when we wouldn't give her the money back for all three, just the one she paid for. She then accused the manager of accusing her of stealing (she didn't) and threatened to call the police (she also didn't)

The cashier got fired though. The store had just opened and the manager had too many people left over from set up. I transferred there from another store so the manager had someone with experience.

Depends on when I notice. If it's during checkout I will tell them. If it's after I'm in my car most likely not. (Maybe if its a local store or something but even then most likely not).

Restaurants usually not though for some reason. Although that is generally they forgot to charge for a drink or a small upgrade. I usually just tip more to make up for it instead

In my experience, this only ever happens at grocery stores and big box marts - but that may be because I never buy more than a couple things from a smaller store. Only times I've noticed a discrepancy have been at the store as it happens or when I get home and see the receipt. With the former, I'll let them know. In the case of the latter, I'll go in next time to actually buy it if it's worth $25 or more, unless it's at Target because Guest Services there doesn't give a shit.
