this recruiter (who would be my boss) reached out to me to discuss it after I applied for one of their science jobs a long time ago. It'd be a pay cut on salary but I might be able to make more in commission. it'd be completely different than my current job, a job I strongly dislike, but it'd be more frantic and all my insurance and stuff is tied up in my current job.

It never hurts to ask. Worst case they say no. There is a huge need for recruiters right now as companies have huge hiring goals to reach. So youre in a position to negotiate.
