How come most of them were able to pass high school english? What does it mean to be 6th grade level? Is that what they teach at that age? Or is it where a certain threshold of people at that age understand that material, such as 5%? How many 6th graders actually read at a 6th grade level? Questions to ponder.

I dont think you really read anything in HS a smart 6th grader couldn't read.

I mean I think it was Hannah Arendt that read the Critique of Pure Reason when she was 14? What do you think she was reading before that?

i dont know about your HS, but mine happily passed along people that had no business passing. simple graduation from HS was pretty much down to attendance.

my reading level sucks and I blame it on the fact that I stopped reading after high school for a couple of years when I entered the workforce until just two years ago when I began attending college. I can read some more difficult than middle school level novels like Cormac McCarthy's stuff but takes me ages to finish them lol

The purpose of school is not to teach knowledge and skills. It's meant first to be government-paid day care so that parents can work, then to crush the spirits of children, and then to act as a filtering mechanism by throwing hurdles at them and seeing who gets over them. Anything learned along the way, other than to obey authority, is incidental.

Having flashbacks of reading aloud in highschool and listening to seniors stumbling over words I could read since elementary school. Idk how anyone can stand to be so inept at such a basic thing

I remember one guy that, when he got to a word he didn't immediately recognize, he just substituted an entirely different word that started with the same few letters. If he couldn't read "extraneous" he'd just say "extreme" instead, or something like that.

I can't speak for others but I know sometimes my brain will read ahead of my mouth which causes me to stumble over my words while reading aloud. It isn't difficulty reading, it's difficulty staying in sync. I started reading ahead to the part I was expected to read when we went in order so that I already knew what I was about to read and it helped keep me from tripping over the reading.
