Board 8 > How many people do you think you've killed in video games?

Obviously getting even any sort of general ballpark number might be impossible, but I wanted to at least think about it a bit. "People" may be a bit vague in a lot of games, but at least even limiting it to sentient humanoid creatures should be a high number.

I was thinking that outside of the simple thousands of human enemies I've mowed down in shooting games* there's also a high number of armies I've slaughtered in strategy games. Especially games where a single unit is really meant to be like a dozen soldiers or whatever. I've committed genocide a few times and have nuked entire cities, but I don't think I've like blown up a planet or anything, even though I'm sure there are games that let you do that.

(*I remember the Uncharted games kept track of how many lives you've taken, and each one of those is good for like five or six hundred kills easy.)

Yeah, I've killed the planet hundreds of times over thanks to pandemic sims.

This was my first thought, largely because the villain in the second game actually brings this fact up to you, that you the hero have actually killed a lot more people than he has.

Honestly had I not played Civilization much I would have this number at really low. Only FPS games I really got into are Halo and Doom which have you killing aliens and demons. I mean I guess there's RPGs but I gotta figure that's gonna add up to a few thousand tops.

Civilization makes it tough though. Probably in the billions just from a handful of late game domination victories. (Early game too but the population of the earth is much lower if you're resolving most of your military squabbling by 1000ad)

Fairly confident I'm not coming remotely close to breaching trillions though. It's probably low billions. 10 billion tops I figure.

Even if we ignore abstractions like controlling an army or nuking a planet, the number is at least in the hundreds of thousands and probably millions for enemies that have died by my own hand. I was really into Dynasty Warriors for a while, where it's not uncommon to kill 2000 people in an hour, and the only reason I don't put it higher for certain is because of not being sure what counts as a person.

EUIV probably has the high score when scaling down to Earth.
