My kitty likes to climb under the covers and tuck herself under my arm, especially if she's scared because it's stormy or something.

Depends entirely on the animal for me.

Cat - almost always fine.
Small dog that doesn't shed - almost always fine
Dog that is larger or sheds a lot - I personally wouldn't want it in my bed

They are around me. Just not where I keep things clean. Like not wearing shoes in the house. Just because I don't wear them inside, doesn't mean I don't wear them ever.

A girl I dated back in college got offended that I shooed her cat off the bed when it jumped on while we were fucking.

I don't want animals in the way of my tossing and turning at night. I'm a tall dude and my legs can end up anywhere on the bed.

Aside from my dog vigorously rolling on all manner of gross shit she comes across on our daily walks, I don't want to wake up to any accidents three inches from my face. I also tend to sleep nude in the summer time and I don't want my junk on the same linens as all of her fur, dander, slobber, etc.

She's also a long hair breed and I'd like to have as many rooms as possible free of her hair, so she's not even allowed upstairs where my bedroom is. She's not allowed on the couch, either. She has her own bed she sleeps on and can go anywhere else, including the backyard, but that's it.

Cat sleeps at the foot of the bed and only sometimes. She likes her cardboard bed a lot more

I wouldn't let a dog sleep in my bed though. My cat is indoor only and the only muck she could possibly carry around is litter on her paws, not random shit from outside

While yes, its technically unsanitary for animals to be where you sleep, but i do enjoy sleeping next to a cat
