Watched all three of the Golden Age Arc films within the past few days. Holy fucking shit did the third movie take a crazy wild ass turn.

yea, even though they omit some stuff due to length, the movie trilogy is still great.

I recommend reading the manga, if you get the chance.

Yea, I've seen a lot of recommendations for the manga. It has me curious. The very first thing I watched was Episode 1 of the 2016 series not realizing it was a sequel. Once I realized, I did research on the movie and the original series.

I thought I read that the movies were a retelling of the original series, and ultimately decided to watch the first two movies. I wanted to see what the original series is like, so I watched episode 1 of the original, then saw that it takes place after the movies which confused me. But I guess later in the original series, they flashback to the Golden Age Arc?

yea, the first episode of the original series takes place during the Black Swordsman Arc, and then it flashes back to the Golden Age Arc.

Its my favorite story of all time. I definitely recommend checking out the manga if youre interested, its leagues above any of the adaptations.

Also, the 2016 adaptation in particular cuts and combines significant chunks of the story. I wouldnt recommend it if youre wanting the whole picture. Even the movie trilogy cut quite a lot of the arc, though it is probably the best adaptation overall.

Should've watched the original series first, might be tough going back since it's dated compared to the movies.

I'm on episode 3 now. Watching on my lunch break. I don't mind the dated look so much. The art style reminds me of Yu Yu Hakusho and it's made me realize young Guts kinda looks like Yusuke.

Edit: In fact, I find the animation of the new series and the movies to be weird. I don't hate it, but it does look a little weird.

Berserk 97 > golden age movies

The only problem with 97 is they cut skull knight for some reason and a lot of action pieces are just still frames but 97 is definitely the way to go then skip straight to the manga

Berserk 2016 is kind of just bad overall

I will say the 97 series definitely makes Corkus extremely more unlikable. I mean I already disliked him, but now I can see just how shitty he really is. And I'm only 3 episodes in. It now makes a lot more sense why he had that long rant about Guts in Movie 2.

I do have a question regarding Griffith. Was he just a regular human who was only chosen because he came across the Behelit? Or was he actually special?

Hes special, or he would never have encountered the Behelit. When he encounters the God of causality in order to be reborn as the Hawk of Darkness, the admonition he receives from God is do as you will.

Figured he must have been special to come across it.

And Judeau is definitely my favorite member from the group.

2016 isn't a sequel series from anything - it adapts the Conviction arc and a couple of the arcs after that. Wouldn't recommend it honestly, which is sad because the 2017 series ends with a nice scene that the rest of the series should've looked like.

If you want more Berserk, manga's definitely the best way to go. If you're going through the 97 series anyways, you can just probably jump back into the manga around the point Guts leaves the Band of the Hawk. That point marks where most of the cut material is at, including two whole volumes and some recurring characters that show up throughout the series. I say this because going through the Golden Age arc three times in such a short time can feel repetitive.

I would still recommend reading the Black Swordsman arc (volumes 1-3) at some point. It's a lot clunkier than the rest of the series in some ways, but it's still a decent introduction to the universe.
