I like the idea of nuclear powered aircraft carriers, with unlimited range and the ability to deploy hundreds of planes to anywhere in the world. Great power.

I think we'll never see another generation of modern-day aircraft carriers after the Ford-class though, because the future is with drones that are smaller... I bet the next generation aircraft carriers will be much smaller and much more numerous, sort of like our submarines.

Of that, the Navy's budget for the coming fiscal year is only about $163 billion or so. $211 billion if you want to include the Marine Corps budget too.

That we spent a lot less on deterrence than we do social safety nets despite both being equally important so I'm not sure where the waste is there.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity for people to look for a career in the growing military sector. IIRC they offer all of the things they lack plus some spending money.

Aircraft carriers are for power projection, air superiority, humanitarian aid, and "keeping the world peace" (by being a visible literal portable war machine). Nuclear submarines are literally only to make our enemies scared by being invisible. I think aircraft carriers are better than subs because of that.
