The open world wasn't as standardized. There was also a more coherent and relatable plot.

I loved FFX, but the maps being too linear was one of it's weaknesses. That said, FFX still had dungeon with puzzles and actual town. It wasn't "just a corridor"

Annoying time of gaming when every game was expected to have the breath of Skyrim of open world (even though the game is as deep as a puddle)

most ff games are very linear, usually you have access to 1 or 2 areas at a time but only one of them will advance the game

people conflate the illusion of choice with an open game

FF 13 came out 2 years before Skyrim. How many good RPGs have little meaningful choices or freedom?

FFX's story, characters, and combat weren't complete shit.

You could still explore and find plenty of side content.

both 10 and 13 use a similar style
basically walk down this corridor until you get to the next cutscene

but 10s world still felt immersive while 13s didnt
so they proved they can do this kind of story telling well with 10 so its even worse that they failed at it with 13

Fun fact: People who complain about FF10 being too linear in defense of FF13 are liars and bad faith actors

As a lifelong FF fan, I couldn't put more than 5 hours into 13 before I gave up. And it's supposed linearity had zero effect on my complete lack of enthusiasm to continue.

It was largely the Era it came out. Look at the graphics of ffx compared to anything else of that time. Just a year prior Ff9 came out... It was truly midn boggling for the time

Ffx being linear and ff13 being linear aren't necessarily bad imo. Problem with Ff13 is that it has terrible plot, combat, music, characters, etc. There is nothing redeeming about it. So when you can't even explore it feels extra bad.

Non linearity can make bad gamws OK in general. Look at skyrim, for example. Even thigh the combat and it and world are complete shit, or at very best dogshit mediocre you can tackle it any way you want

The original square team made 10. It was the last game they made. They made all the legendary ff titles like Ff9 ffx ff7 ff6.

Ffx was the last true FF game imo for this reason. Just like any other developer with entirely new staff, square exists in name only

There are plenty of non linear Jrpgs that just aren't that popular in the wesr. Saga frontier is an example of one that was released in The US

There was a video Ive watched on this that kind of hit the nail on the head IMO. Basically FFXIIIs linearity was pretty pervasive in multiple elements of the game (levels, character progression, exploration, etc) as opposed to FFXs mainly being linear in level design.
