I don't know why this is being repeated over and over

People have been shit on in these horrible jobs for 50+ years and three months off made them realize they'd rather be unemployed?

I don't get this logic, it just seems like what we WISH was happening
The pandemic has caused a lot of people to re-evaluate themselves and the world. That's why so many are getting retraining and saying "fuck it" to bullshit jobs.

This really shouldn't be hard.

Is there any actual evidence that people are just choosing not to work these jobs? I've seen a million opinion pieces blindly speculating about why the gap exists, but no actual data. Not even a poll. The closest thing I can find is a pew poll from Feb that states that most unemployed are looking but pessimistic about finding work and considering changing careers just to find work, but that doesn't line up with the current job numbers.

This.

Unemployment rates are back to what they were pre pandemic in the US.

Anything under 4% is also considered excellent which happens to be the case in my state. We're actually better now.

Something is definitely going on. I work with a lot of small businesses of various sizes and fields and they all struggle with manpower right now. One guy was offering $30/hr to do flooring and couldnt get help.

I work in a lumber mill as an engineer and there is a huge shortage. The thing is that it's mostly low-paying jobs that work on a single shift so I cannot easily automate these. Like robots are expensive and they need to work a lot to be worthwhile. We calculate the payback time using that low salary so that makes it longer.

Because they are all on unemployment. Why would you wanna go back to a job when you are getting paid nearly the same amount for doing nothing?,

I'm fucking homeless, have been since before Covid, and I still wouldn't work any of these shitty jobs. Because NEWS FLASH, I would still be fucking homeless because of the shitty pay.

So why bother?

How do you manage to eat and keep up basic hygiene?

Genuinely curious, not judgemental here.

Food stamps, and nothing I can do about the other. Haven't bathed/showered in years and my teeth are rotting out of my skull.

y-years?

Yes, I've been homeless for over 4 and a half years now, though I had access to a type of shower at first. Come October though, it'll have been 2 years since I've been properly clean.

The absolute best I've been able to do are personal wipes when I manage to save enough money from bottle/can turn-ins, but that takes a while, and for the longest time even that wasn't an option because of panic-hoarders.

Don't worry about it, at this point I don't care, I've long accepted that my life is fucked and never getting better.

Frankly I'd be better off just catching the damn virus and dying off, I'm just tired of waking up everyday to all this shit.

Flooring actually takes skill and sometimes certification depending on local laws and building codes because the guys who do it can be held liable if they do a shitty job. It's not as simple as nail wood to ground.

Truth is we've had skilled labor shortages for a while because of the stigma associated with those jobs. Truck drivers in particular are seen as a shitty desperate job. In fact you need a lot of training, skills, and they're extremely difficult jobs. We've grown to exalt the indoor white collar doctor / lawyer / banker / engineering jobs and everything else is for peasants.

Also the industry screws over drivers and popular perception has been that the job will be automated away sooner rather than later. If we talk about this as a job market, the trucking industry hasn't sold itself to workers.

I also stand by them and am not trying to make a statement, I just don't understand how poor people can afford to not work, that's the whole reason they had shit jobs to begin with

They can afford to not work because they already know how to get by with very little and many of them have no need, want, or immediate use for most of the crap shoved down our throats by capitalism.
