actually someone posted this yesterday on r/gaming, apparently some weird game icon took over their shortcuts. This is less offensive but still stupid and obnoxious.

If you click on an icon, does it read the name?

Assuming it's not malware, check your accessibility options to see if some sort of text to speech mode got turned on for people with poor vision. It wouldn't be the first time a Windows update caused settings to change.

Edit: I vaguely remember that some older games would also reset your desktop resolution and not put it back, so it could be something like that.

Did a quick scan through the accessibility settings (vision, audio and text-to-speech related pages) and nothing stood out.

Only games I've played the past few days are Melvor Idle, Cookie Clicker, Runescape and Battlefield 5. I only just noticed this after Battlefield 5 and Cookie Clicker though, so maybe one of those? :\ Kind of a weird icon to assume after a resolution shift though lol.

I doubt it was a resolution shift. I was just providing that as an example of programs that altered desktop settings on launch.

It just seems way more likely that some sort of driver is adding an overlay to your icons, because the alternative is something that was able to edit the icon sprites for everything on the desktop.

Just scrolled through the Default Apps list for all gazillion and one extension types and didn't see anything out of the norm.

If I right-click on the shortcut and open its properties, then the item opens in the task bar with the normal icon. I did this with FFXIV and the .exe files in there were normal, too (had either no overlay, a small gear, or the UAC shield).

I've had to reset this plenty of times.

If you pic a app and check that box the app icon will show up on all kinds of shit.

I posted this on the PC board and someone was like "Just right-click on the desktop and click Refresh, or press F5".

1 - I didn't know that was an option and
2 - it actually worked

wtf is refreshing the desktop lmao
