I guess it also depends on the size of your backyard, whether you have grass, etc., but I was curious

I do both. I take her out the fence to walk/run, but if I personally dont want to go, she uses the gate.

Both, of course. Letting them out isn't a substitute for a proper walk.

I walk my dog every day, the yard isn't enough

It's like a person, even if you get your 5000 steps at work you still need dedicated exercise to be healthy

A dog more than likely isnt going to just walk around the perimeter nonstop. Theres no actual route for them to exercise with.

Its like humans running on a trail vs running around your home.

This.

Also i don't know why people get dogs if they're not interested in spending time with their dog and going out with the dog

For my old dogs, I let them walk. For the new puppy, my mom walks her because she can squeeze through the fence.

Both. I have a pitbull and yard time isn't enough exercise for her.

I wasn't planning on getting any pets, I was just curious for some reason about how some people here (w/backyards) deal with their dogs going outside.

When you have a dog it's actually fun to walk your dog. I watch him and he's funny and has a great time, and it makes me feel good

Dogs need to be walked, it's as much mental stimulation as it is physical. The backyard gets boring super fast and they can become destructive if they are bored.
