I do both. I take her out the fence to walk/run, but if I personally dont want to go, she uses the gate.

For my old dogs, I let them walk. For the new puppy, my mom walks her because she can squeeze through the fence.

i have a decent sized back yard, i think its like 100' on each side. i still walk my dogs every day for at least 20 minutes.

Dogs need to be walked, it's as much mental stimulation as it is physical. The backyard gets boring super fast and they can become destructive if they are bored.
