https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_time#Workweek_structure

The traditional American business hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, representing a workweek of five eight-hour days comprising 40 hours in total. These are the origin of the phrase 9-to-5, used to describe a conventional and possibly tedious job.[32] Negatively used, it connotes a tedious or unremarkable occupation. The phrase also indicates that a person is an employee, usually in a large company, rather than an entrepreneur or self-employed.

Seriously? So people dislike working 9 to 5? They'd rather work on the weekends, or when there's no daylight outside? What's the downside of working 9 to 5, other than that all other businesses are open during that time and it's hard to run errands?

Because people don't want to work 40 hours a week. How did that obvious fact go over your head

Getting paid to eat lunch sounds like a dream, so I'd happily take a 9 to 5 job and get back an hour of my day.

i work 730-4 now. but with sunday/monday off. i'm back in school so i can get a more typical 9-5 job so i can just have the weekend and long holidays off. if you're salary you can just leave a couple hours early if you have an appointment.

With commute it's more like 730 to 6, in the worst traffic every day, not enough time to get anything done before you're getting ready to do it again.

Soul crushing.

Because, in theory, one third of my adult life will go towards work, one third to sleep, and one third to leisure. That's the best case scenario.

In reality, travelling to work, looking after children, and running errands will leave me with substantially less leisure time. So I would prefer not to work a 40 hour week.

I don't think most people view 9 to 5 jobs as bad, as working those hours usually involves higher paying salaries... for the most part. I think the description sort of sums it up. If it's used as negative, it's because it represents working for someone else with no flexibility. And since 9 to 5 is a popular working time, it's just sort of used that way negatively sometimes. *shrug*

You're right, people should care more about filing reports and selling printer ink, those lazy fools
