Poll Questions are so

I feel like so many games that get hyped nowadays are touted as open world, is it something thats really the best when its done properly, or is it often a mask for less engaging content, by making more of it? Or maybe another reason.

I feel like theres no point in forcing a choice when some people really just dont care.

For me. Its not that I dont care, but rather that I can be in the mood for either so its not really a question of preference.

I prefer linear because I hate exploration in open world games i tend to go straight to the next destination unless im forced to search and kill enemies to level up for a boss battle

I like open world games, but it seems like every game I play on PS4 is open world and it gets tiring. I wish more games were more linear. Open world games generally have very little replay value

This is a bad habit for me as well. I guess it doesnt help that games arent consistent with whether youll be overpowered for doing a certain amount of side content or not.

I found as I got older I am less impressed by games that promise hundreds of hours of content and more impressed by games that promise an 8-15 hour experience.

I feel like with an open world it's harder to tell a concise story. Two examples:
  • Original Mass effect trilogy was better than Andromeda, in part because Andromeda was open world and there was too much redundant and repetitive shit to do you just get bored and burnt out. I feel like having it play like Mass Effect 3 would have made it much better.
  • The Witcher 2 vs 3. 3 was an amazing game, don't get me wrong, but 2 was better gameplay wise because of the format of the game actually was able to give you great boss fights requiring different strategies and prep, along with a great semi-open world.

I tend to like games that are somewhere in the middle (Deus Ex, Metroidvanias generally, some RPGs, even Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil (originals), etc.) the best.

If that's a cop-out, then probably linear games when comparing the two extremes.

There are a handful of open world games that are some of my favorites (Morrowind, New Vegas, San Andreas), but the rest mostly bore me in large doses. On the other hand, there are tons of linear games where the linearity does not bother me in the slightest and that I could play constantly (Mario, Mega Man, various action games, shooters, other platformers, etc.).

one of my favourite games ever (outer wilds) is open world so I know it's possible for them to be good

but other than that I'll pick linear every day

God, this. My philosophy used to be if its not a dollar per hour im not buying it with few exceptions, and now its if its not <=10 hours im not buying it with few exceptions.

Plus, as others have said, most games dont earn/need their open world. Those that do (TES etc) are a different story

One of the issues I tend to see is that games have the first level or area as very immersive and interesting, then they dont put as much effort in the remaining areas. Although sometimes, they might, but people get bored of the extra stuff and ignore it after a while.

I like system based games, rather than heavily scripted ones (those can be great too). So generally, I love the idea of open worlds but maybe 80% of AAA devs who make open worlds don't utilize them with a lot of interesting systems.
