In one sense, sure. You can sweep controversial opinions under the rug, but then at least some of the people under the rug are gonna form a new community together. You're probably right that the majority of people don't care enough about unpopular opinions to seek out an alternative community...

But...flat earth, anti-vaxx, 9/11 conspiracies, moon landing conspiracies, neo-nazism, and the whole "incel" movement have distressingly large followings regardless, wouldn't you say?
