I suppose the issue there is that discords are usually for like-minded people, or simply people who care about a particular interest. If someone is in a Smash Bros discord, achieving political equilibrium seems fairly pointless. Otherwise, you might be in a discord with friends, and youll probably all have similar opinions with slight variations.

that only works if everyone is on the same social stratum. people with different status in society side by side with different political opinions are less comparable and will cause more friction

The big problem with social media is the immense quantity of "groups" you can choose to belong to. A large portion of the human population dislikes people who disagree with them on matters one deems important.

People on Discord, Twitter, Facebook, etc. usually have one of two responses to a person who consistently disagrees with them:

1.) They block the person, unfriend them, leave the discord server they're on, etc.

OR

2.) They report the individual and try to have them removed from the server/website entirely, thus removing any potential for that person to interact with them.

In both of these cases, the interactions between the individuals are discontinued. Likewise, one or the other person has now left the server/been kicked/is no longer part of the discussion. So now they need a new server and new conversations. Their thought process will usually be something like "Well that sucked, I had better find a server with more people who think like me."

Spoiler Alert: No matter what you believe, no matter how crazy, there is a discord server or facebook group for you to join.

Back in the day, people had to adjust to interacting with people of different opinions/backgrounds, because the only real option was to hang out with friends in person, public or private. Nowadays, there are very nearly zero consequences for being a hateful person who openly reviles people of particular groups (i.e. racists; people who think all Republicans are evil; etc) because you can no longer be ostracized from society.

When people tell you you're being hateful and that they don't want to be your friend anymore, it's not "Oh, maybe I should change," it's "Well fuck you, too, I'll go join this discord server full of people who agree with me."

There is always another option, and that's how so many people in the current day wind up with extremist viewpoints. They get funneled away from the middle of the road by one side being either oppositional or inviting, and because most 'groups' online are overwhelmingly tilted toward one side or another, there's not enough productive discussion between different viewpoints to foster growth and compromise.

It's a shitty situation but it's also natural for humans to be tribal that way. Not much can be done about it.

Some people have different views on abortion. I myself am pro choice, and was arguing the other day with my sis in law (civilly of course) who held a similar view to Wendy. That doesn't make them shitty people.

I've bad both of those happen to me on one server I'm on.

Person reacted negatively to my opinion, thus they whined to the admin(I was admin too). Then they blocked me and went about their day.

Dumb as shit way to act.
