There are floating masses of plastic in the ocean the size of Rhode Island. This is partially on people not recycling, but recyclers know that there are SO many plastic containers that are not recyclable.

Switch to recyclable containers WITHOUT raising the price of the item.

I thought I remembered reading a few years back that they discovered a plastic devouring microbe that they thought they could eventually release into the ocean to consume and eliminate the plastic problems. Then nothing else thereafter, haven't heard a word about it. I haven't actively sought it out either, so there could be new developments.

Because the plastics industry will not allow that to happen.

Yes, I think it should be banned. We have alternatives now.

But who is "we"? I watch food blogs from Asian countries all the time, and their street food is served exclusively in plastic bags and styrofoam. With plastic utensils.

It's an interesting watch but every time I keep thinking about all that shit floating out in the ocean choking a turtle.

Idk, the ones they GMO'd can break down a plastic bottle 90% in like 10 hours

There just needs to be a will to gather that shit up and get to recycling. We really need some sort of international effort to clean the ocean, is what we need

Not gonna happen. There will be no real effort to fix the issue until it is too late, like usual.

no plastic is really recyclable because even the very few that are create more carbon emissions to recycle than to make new ones

Plastic recycling is a big lie sold to the public by plastic producers. Almost all the plastic sent for recycling ends up in the wastestream especially now that China has no interest in importing our trash anymore.

So, I throw any plastics in the trash rather than contribute to more waste by sending them into the recycling to need more effort sorting them out just to end up in the trash anyways.

Define "non-recyclable". Are you satisfied with it just being physically possible to recycle in theory, or does this extend to anything that can't be recycled in practice? And in the latter case, what counts - is it okay if Canada can recycle it because "you could send it up there"? What about just the next state over? What about if a particular county doesn't have the facilities but a neighbouring one would, is it banned in that county?

Nice idea, bit trickier in practice.
