I'm aware that COVID has generally produced a spike in complaints regarding mental and emotional wellness, but anecdotally, I don't know one person who seems secure in how their lives are going. Lots of concerns about hours at work (or it's evil twin, an endless number of hours with no time off), an inability to find work with a living wage, or concerns about getting cut. Even the people I see around the area where I live all seem crabby and really short with each other. For me personally, I'd need an actual time machine to feel very good about my life. I've got some underlying heath conditions that needed to be discovered and treated years ago for me to have good quality of life, and that might be skewing my perspective. My family is alive and well, and Im happy for my parents that theyre financially stable and retired now. My mom had a cancer scare the other week (everything is fine, it was actually nothing) and my dad had prostate cancer last year, which they were thankfully able to fix. My life is kind of a mess. My mental health is not very good right now (definitely not suicidal) and I feel sort of lost in the world at the moment. I made a ton of mistakes in life and I feel that theyre catching up to me. I could bitch for hours about how I fucked my life up, but Ive been taking steps to move forward and I feel like Im not getting the results that I need to see. The workforce is totally fucked right now. Explosion of population means theres unprecedented competition for every job thats not food (which Im never doing again). The more people applying for the same spot, eventually someone will promise to do the job for less money than the other applicants. Then this trend continues until an $80k/year with benefits job turns into $15/hr. The prices for everything is SO high right now and wages are down to the point where it would be a crime to pay less. Biden got our hopes up about going back to a peacetime economy, but thats not gonna happen. Companies are so accustomed to paying bottom dollar and charging extortionate rates that theyll never go back to pre-911 pricing and wages.
