Took like 10 minutes, worked without a hitch. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of it.

Now I've got 2 TB of storage. Didn't want to fork over $350+ for a 2TB Gen IV SSD

It's official. Pretty much all Gen 4 ssds are supported as long as they have Read > 5000 MB/sec or around it.

Also, digital foundry discovered that the heat sinks really aren't that necessary for most of them, and the size of heat sinks has proven to be the biggest hassle for early adopters. Turns out you probably don't need them.

The heatsink I used. Fits perfectly.

Lol at upgraded. With the size of games it should've come with a 1.5 TB drive in the first place

I think the only difficulty is making sure you get a compatible one, but any major online store should make a point to specify it

Fortunately it's quickly becoming much cheaper than Xbox's option

Pretty much all recognizable brand Gen 4 SSDs are compatible, fortunately. Heck, even ones that don't meet spec often work (Digital Foundry tested one with 3500 read / write and it worked)

I wound up getting the expensive $220 1 TB option since there were no other options.

But I hate MS's obsession with proprietary components. It's something they've done since the original Xbox. The 360's hard drive was proprietary too, and it was frustrating as hell. I'm still bitter about the OG Xbox's required DVD remote dongle.

I'm in no real hurry since it's really designated as a supplemental console.

For the Series X I don't mind, but I find the fact that a $299 console that is all-digital but only has has ~300ish GB of storage that can only be expanded with a SSD that costs almost as much as the console itself to be a bit ridiculous.

You literally just plug it in.

That's it.

There's literally only one screw between the fully assembled console and the expansion bay. The side of the console slides off, and then the expansion bay cover has one screw that you remove. That's it.

Also, don't forget that it's an additional drive; it doesn't replace your previous one. So you'll have nearly 2 TB if you get a 1 TB drive. Or like you said, if you get a 2 TB drive you will have 3 TB.

More like 1.6 TB if you add 1 TB. The base SSD is not a full 1TB. Plus, Sony still has that lovely problem, where the hard drive tells you it's full with like 80GB left. I already had to delete games to make room for Lost Judgment.

I stripped the screw inside the m2 slot because I looked at it the wrong way and it's made of sand, so it took a while to remove it with pliers

To the above poster, the SSD probably won't overheat but it reeks of cheapassedness to buy a $100+ SSD and not get a $10 heatsink and leave both your SSD and $400-500 PS5 at risk

Generation 4 ssds tend to run pretty hot, and if they don't have a heat sink they are designed to down clock their performance. Digital foundry tested with and without, and there was no difference in performance, but a pretty significant difference in temperature.
