Like, someone who has never, ever been good in anything theyve done, yet somehow still keeps getting roles year after year?

There are actors who are sort of known for being bad like Nicholas Cage, but even he is capable of putting in halfway decent performances in stuff like Matchstick Men, The Weatherman, Raising Arizona, etc.

John Travolta has arguably never been good in anything apart from roles like Grease or Saturday Night Fever where he can just dance and sort of shmooze his way through.

Is there anyone even close to Travolta in terms of the gap between success and ability?

You didn't like him in Pulp Fiction? He was no Samuel L Jackson or Robert Denero (in Jackie Brown) but he played the role he was given believable.

I'd say this isn't true because he at least manages to be entertaining (kinda like Nicholas Cage).

I never minded him in Pulp Fiction but he doesnt exactly stand out from the crowd (which to be fair would a tall task given that the crowd consisted of guys like Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth and Harvey Keitel).

I heard someone say once that his character in Pulp Fiction was just him acting the way he thought a cool guy would, and that Vincent Vega is John Travoltas impersonation of a cool dude and that I find incredibly believable and funny.

I thought he was great in Pulp Fiction and Face Off. But those were both in the 90's, so...

That's very believable on my end too. Lol. I might need to watch it again with that context.

Similar in terms of being more successful than he should have but I think Costner is simply mediocre where Travolta stinks out loud.

Yeah alright, Ill give you Blow Out. And hes certainly not currently an A-lister, but he definitely was up until probably 10 years ago or so? But hes still had a huge career built largely on absolute crap performances.

Travolta was washed up before Pulp Fiction. He had the "Look Who's Talking" series, and Bruce Willis was the way bigger star despite having only a voice role. He was even overshadowed by Roseanne Barr. After Pulp Fiction, Travolta was temporarily scraping A-lister, but "Battlefield Earth" killed that off.

The rise and height of his career was definitely between 1975-1983.

And yet he was still cast in plenty of stuff after this: Swordfish, Ladder 49, Hairspray, Basic dude is like Teflon, no bad performance sticks to him

I enjoyed him as a bad guy in The Punisher too.

He does a good job playing a villain thinking about it.
