Someone had told me the chip shortage for new cars is driving up the price of used cars but really I have no idea how true that is.

You could get a winter beater a few years ago for 800-1000, nowadays it is like 3500-4000 for some clapped out 20 year old vehicle.

Because they're already tested.

Imagine buying a brand new car and it doesn't work.

Cash for Clunkers obliterated a huge amount of stock, and the stock that remains has become more valuable as a shortage of new cars happened.

The market had recovered from cash for clunkers, before covid used beaters were cheap as they should be.

Cash for Clunkers was a government program (obviously with another more official name) that incentivized people to trade in old cars for newer, more fuel-efficient ones and for the dealers to scrap those older cars.

We cant produce enough trucks to fill lots due to the chip shortage. However people still want trucks and SUVs. So they are paying more for them due to no competition or stockpile. Since people are paying more for new vehicles this drives up the price of used as well.

Im actually legitimately concerned about this.

My car is like 15-16 years old with like 135,000 miles. I dont know if thats good or bad, but it definitely sounds loud when it runs. Other than that I have no real concerns but I certainly hope I wont have to get a new car any time soon

If it's just loud engine noise you probably have a hole in your exhaust somewhere. Especially if the car still 'feels' fine to drive and doesn't have any weird power dips.
