Japan had an economic collapse in the early 90s. Their fathers, who had been so loyal to their companies and had been promised life long job security, were being laid off in droves. Their mothers gave up their dreams and stayed in loveless marriages where their life was spent waiting for their husbands and children to come home.

The youth, after seeing how the strict societal expectations of their parents had failed them, revolted.

Many of these dudes were Golden Boys. They came from already successful families, had perfect grades, and had passed exams to attend the most prestigious schools. They would have been set for life in a high wage salary-man position with a nuclear family. However, they turned down that stressful lifestyle to live like bohemians. They became street performers, learned the then dying art of making soba noodles by hand, or took temp jobs so they can fund their hobbies.

So yah, the protagonist is just an exaggerated version of a phenomena that was happening in real life.
