Current Events > Beat Deathloop. Pretty great, but falls short of its premise.

My biggest complaints:

1 - The game pretty much gives you the best gear right from the very first time you learn how to Infuse (keep gear over infinite number of loops) and this alone pretty much breaks any Roguelike "risk" elements the game has.

2 - While there's a lot of exploration, the game is a bit too hand-hold-y with how to perfectly eliminate all the Visionaries - to the point where it literally maps out how to do it all in one go once you have the information necessary to do so.

3 - It's way too forgiving with revives (3 lives per time of day, 12 per loop basically) and it saves between each time of day, so you never feel like any progress is at risk - even in the same loop.

4 - Silenced weapons are basically broken. As soon as you get one, the game becomes easy mode because the AI is pretty bad AND bodies instantly disappear when you kill them.

5 - Weapon variety is pretty slim, and honestly a silenced Uzi with accuracy trinkets is the best sniper rifle in the game. Seriously.

Overall, I'd give it an 8.5/10. If they had made the game harder and the a bit less straightforward, it would've been better. But still an amazing game.

I've not nearly finished it, but I definitely get the vibe of it falling short of its premise. Outside of getting the timing right for the visionaries, there doesn't seem to be a lot of situations where you improve by repeating loops. I think part of this is the difficulty, as you said. Even when I completely fucked up approaching Harriet Morse, she flooded the place with toxic gas, and sent waves of guards at me, I still managed to kill her. Or Aleksis seems to want you to learn how to tell him apart from everyone else at his party, but it's only mildly inconvenient to just murder everyone there. The only one to take me off guard was Fia setting off her reactor.

I think the premise would have been better served if the visionaries had more of a difficulty curve. Like Wenjie can be pretty easy, but it's essentially impossible to kill Aleksis with the direct approach.

And actually, the weapon variety would be part of this too. The reward for killing Frank is a weapon, but it's like you said: the weapon is cool, but it uses small caliber ammo, so it conflicts with the actual best weapon: the silent uzi.

Is there a difficulty choice at game start to improve things?

No. It's meant to have adaptive difficulty where it gets harder the better you do, but I've not really seen that.

You also can't unequip the item that gives you three respawns. I think they forced that in for the multiplayer, but it would have made the game more interesting if you could switch it with another ability.

Is it like Dishonored where mastering the systems make it so you can destroy the objectives, or are they boxing us in, I guess is my question? This game looked solid and I love the developer

I like being up against the wall with games like these, makes me feel like I achieved something

I give something 10/10 if it's fun

But on replays when the mechanics break down, or you thought things were random etc...

It's tough for me to say because I was already familiar with Dishonored. I wouldn't say it boxes you in though.

Well there are some psychos who chose the no powers path on their first playthroughs for the sequel, and I was wondering about a middle ground for challenge.

How is your work btw? I know this is just CE but you have a lot of us thinking about you with this pandy, and I want you to know you have support here and there are people that absolutely value what you do and your input here. I look forward to your posts.

The powers in Deathloop are similar to Dishonored (there's a Blink and a Domino, for instance), but they're not nearly as powerful IMO. They're more convenient than anything else. So you can do a no-powers run, but the FPS mechanics more than make up for any weaknesses you might have.

A no-infusion run might be closer. Infusion is how you keep weapons, trinkets, and powers between loops. So you could reset yourself back to nothing each loop instead of getting stronger.

Thanks, but I think you've confused me with someone else lol.
