He announced that the 2 men have gone through unbelievably difficult ordeal while in prison as Spavor was initially sentenced to 11 years in the big house and Kovrig awaiting his fate for their crimes last month It was considered a retaliatory move after Wangzhou was arrested on Dec 1, 2008 when then the Trump administration demanded she be extradited over her crimes Meng plead not guilty to multiple fraud charges as part of her plea deal after being charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracies to commit bank and wire fraud 2 and a half years ago. It appeared Joe Biden brokered the deal with China to release Meng in exchange for the 2 Canadians as this 3 year battle put Canada in the middle of the 2 countries spat in which Trump was also going to use Meng as a political tool as well to pressure China on various issues. Meng has been in house arrest in Vancouver for 3 years while fighting the extradition and had read out a statement thanking the Canadian government for "upholding the rule of law". Meng has now left Canada and is on her way home to China while Spavor and Kovrig got on a plane at the same time to leave as well ending this 3 year war and hopefully repairing relations between the 2 countries.
