"So is anything with at least 2 states" not true, you need memory as well. In fact I think you need a special kind of memory too (Turing Machine) altho it's been a few years since I've thought about any of this...

it's basic theory of computation stuff

Anything the takes an input and produces an output computes, no?

I mean, if that's what you define computation as then sure... but then you wouldn't even need 2 states to do that :) just define f(x) = x for all inputs

I think this is a good representation of the argument:
https://medium.com/the-spike/yes-the-brain-is-a-computer-11f630cad736
To summarize the formal definitions:
(1) an algorithm is anything a Turing machine can do,
(2) computable functions are defined as those functions that we have algorithms for,
(3) a computer is anything which physically implements algorithms in order to solve computable functions.

Main discrepancy here is that a computer does not need to be turing complete.

Yes, like I said above "an algorithm is anything a Turing machine can do" you can google what a TM is, but its hard to understand why a TM is needed w/o understanding the buildup (automata, automata with memory, etc)

perhaps it does not go without saying, that a TM is not just defined as something w/ 2 states.. but a comic strip illustrator shouldn't really be held to the standard of understanding theoretical computer sciences lol

But a computer does not need to be turing complete under this definition, which is why rocks become computers, more or less.

i don't necessarily want to read some drivel arguing semantics, that comes to the conclusion that a rock is a computer

maybe in some non-formal setting someone might be convinced... but im a computer scientist by education... so not really interested or convincible

if by your definition that is a computer, so be it, i have nothing to argue

It's written by a computer scientist who has a PhD in it.

Edit: actually not entirely true, has a computer science bachelors but a PhD in neuroscience, is in a department of computer science, though.

Sort of? With odd limitations and complex relationships to its hardware inputs.

For example:

Can start learning about music while still in the womb.

Can learn complex language, but if it doesn't receive appropriate input before age 10 (approx) that's no longer possible.

Imprinting of certain sound profiles seems to happen at a young age, famously someone raised in a Japanese language environment can't distinguish between the L&R sounds. (Don't feel superior, Anglophones can't distinguish the different R sounds in French, or the clicks of the Pacific islanders).

So maybe? But not one you'd design.

getting older allows one to avoid pointless arguments like this... if you want to be more informed you can study theory of computation yourself... im sure then w/ your neurosci background you can make your own conclusion

There are many ways to say you are not invested in discussing other than saying that the discussion is beneath you, particularly after not justifying your stance at all lmao. It's like the definition of pretentious.
