I don't own a PS5 so that's why I'm not playing the remake.

Just beat the Phalanx and can finally level up. Not sure what build I'm going for. I started as a Royal and the magic seems really strong, but could also trivialize the game which wouldn't be so fun.

Lot of observations to make immediately.

Mana/FP is in this game, something I assumed was introduced by DS3. The Nexus hub is also reminiscent of that game.

The halved health from dying seems pretty ridiculous, but I'm guessing the game is more or less balanced around it. Parrying is REALLY powerful, being easy and doing far more damage than pokes against well armored foes, and spells seem not only powerful but very plentiful. Enemies in the first area drop lots of the healing grass, sort of like blood in Bloodborne.

I am surprised by the number of cutscenes and scripted stuff, like the guy you rescue in the first level walking around the area and killing all the goons for you.

I almost beat the Vanguard on my first try, then made a new character but rolled into an attack that time. I was streaming to my friends so I didn't bother trying him again. Sad that he's missable like that. Then again it seems like he's basically Asylum Demon with an axe and loads of HP.

Another "wow, that's DS1" moment is the hollow that rolls a boulder down the stairs at you, which also breaks part of the level geometry.

And the lore is about a scourge caused by an eldritch entity called The Old One... there's the Bloodborne! It's like all of FromSoft's later works had the seeds planted by this one game.

*spoilers about dying* whenever you die at a stage in body form, it actively makes the stage more difficult.

to avoid that, a lot of players intentionally die in the Nexus.

if you want to learn more about that, look into "world tendency"

Do you mean that dying in the nexus changes world tendency in a way opposite to how dying in a level does?

nah, just that people don't want to play in body form at all due to potential risks, and dying in the Nexus has no negative effects.

How viable is it to invest in both physical damage and magic? It might just be that the first area is easy but I like having both the options to spellcast on crowds of goons and always parry tougher foes.

In demon's souls, the spell buffs don't scale with your stats iirc. They're just a fixed buff of like 30%, and even if you say have a broken beasts talisman that you don't have the requirements for, it actually drains your HP at at slower rate of 1 HP per second instead of 1%, so its a rare instance in a game where having garbage equipment and stats is actually better.

How do you get that to work?

I want you to grab your nuts. Grab your balls. I want you to take a handful, and just grab your nuts real quick. Swivel 'em around in a circular motion.

So I just beat the Flamelurker. That was crazy. The first time I entered his arena, he beat my head in without me even landing an attack.

This time, I came in with the water spell to start with. I did like half of his health with my soul arrows, but then I was out of MP. My winged spear did almost no damage to him, and I realized that I didn't have my Fragrant Ring equipped, so I had to inventory manage while he was flying around the room to equip it and then wait out the mana regeneration. At quarter health he starts burning up and can do his explosion fist attack multiple times in a row. Surprisingly, his safest move to heal is his enormous jump that lands him right in front of you because of its immense cool down. The Heater Shield +2 I found down there was also a big help in this fight, as it was the best suited shield I could equip with my current stats. This was one of the most intense soulsborne fights, and honestly harder than any fight in Bloodborne IMO (well, that game's mechanics also make it relatively easier than the other games). I was surprised that he had a sort of second phase in a game this old; if you look at Dark Souls 1 a lot of bosses don't even have noticeable different phases until pretty late in the game. My friend said that I may have beat this boss earlier than the devs intended for the player.

I met Patches a bit before that and he offered me treasure, but I'd seen this guy before... I took five minutes poking that weird lizard's butt and then freaked out and rolled away when its corpse started glowing. Hilariously, the explosion nearly killed Patches, and he just repeated himself in disbelief afterwards. The "treasure" was just a club.

There was a lava cave down there that had a lot of treasure, but earlier in this area, I instantly died from stepping in that firepit even with a flame resistance ring on, so I didn't feel like risking it. I'm not sure how great the water shield spell is at increasing environmental fire resistance either.

I found two really interesting items called the Fists of God. They do half magic damage, which seems really strong in this game, and when used as a shield the Fist appears to have a REALLY fast parry, though I'd need to test that.

Destroyed the Leechmonger.

Interesting how this area had a special spear weapon that was part of the environment with a "withdraw weapon" prompt. That said it's a Faith weapon and I'm more leveling sorcery.

Also realized sadly that the Fists of God scale with Faith, not Magic. Pretty obvious in retrospect.

I wouldn't worry about world tendency in a first playthrough. You'll miss stuff if you don't, but it's better to have something to replay for than trying to merticuously optimize a game you've never played before.

I just had the most wholesome experience. I was going through the third area of the poison swamp place after Leechmonger when I got invaded by a guy named Nel. I was pretty far through the muck and I thought he was coming to own me so I just tried to press forward and keep distance, but he caught up. He just kept gesturing at me and I couldn't figure out how to gesture at first, I thought he wanted a fight. But then he pointed at the way forward and started slaying all the monsters and we just started adventuring together. He escorted me all the way to the fog gate.

You mean the Storm Troller. Because it always knocks back humanoid enemies.
