Maybe its just misunderstood by the viewers just like the sopranos ending?

they spent a ton of money on the marketing of this new movie and it ends up sucking lol

Does it suck?

Or is it more just a case of people not caring because it's been so long since The Sopranos ended?

Or maybe people had higher expectations for what they thought it was going to be, versus what it was actually going to be?

I was trying to watch it earlier but HBO Max was having issues and kept buffering (whereas twitch and youtube were fine).

I've never seen The Sopranos but the trailers got me interested so I'll probably watch this and then start watching The Sopranos sometime soon.

It's.......fine. not really good or bad.

It's well made and the acting is really well done. But the screenplay is just kind of boring and never really goes anywhere meaningful. Feels like they just tried to make it about 3 or 4 major subplots rather then having a central one. Which is a pretty shitty approach to making a movie. Could've maybe of made a decent miniseries, which would have given it more time to bead out those plots appropriately.

I thought the movie was going to largely be about the newark riots through the world of the Sopranos. Which sounded awesome. But the riots are really just a largely meaningless footnote to the plot of the first half of the movie.

Also they made Silvio completly bald and in at least his late 20s or early 30s in 1967? Da fuck?!

Overall, it's maybe a slightly above average crime drama with the Sopranos IP slapped onto it.

If you want a decent Sopranos spinoff watch Lilyhammer on Netflix instead.

I liked it, but I would say it was just good not great. I am not surprised it is divisive with fans of the show. I also think there is a little of the "misunderstood" like the finale to it. David Chase doesn't like to spell everything out and leave a lot either for interpretation or to be analyzed.

For example, the movie was heavily promoted as who made Tony Soprano. So it is implied that Dickie Molitsanti is the one that taught Tony the ropes, but in reality based on what I think the movie was trying to convey at the end is that he was more of a father figure to him than his own dad or uncle, and him being killed probably set Tony on the path, where if he lived he may have steered him away from it in the end.

Dunno. I watched 3 or 4 seasons of The Sopranos and thought it was mostly pretty boring.

I liked the episode where some stuff happens and theyre stranded out in the cold.
