Also Toby was the best Peter, the other ones are way too cool to be convincing nerds. Tobys Peter was a sad sack with a good heart so him getting powers felt more satisfying.

Spider-Man is supposed to make quips. Thats literally what he does.

Tobey Maguire couldnt act his way out of a paper bag. Complete garbage. Films were fine for their day but have aged terribly. Andrew was better and Tom Holland is unquestionably the best.

Spider-Man does, Peter Parker had zero confidence outside the mask.

This is true. They played a significant part in paving the way for the MCU, but because of the drastic improvements in superhero filmmaking, the early movies seem a lot more clumsy by comparison.

In that way, the Raimi films kind of orchestrated their own demise by leading the way for other movies to improve the formula. Like the hero soldier who lays down on the barbed wire so others can crawl over.

My Spider-Man take:

Tobey was a a shit Peter/Spider-Man in good movies.

Andrew was a good Peter / Spider-Man in shit movies.

And Tom is a great Peter / Spider-Man in great movies.

Depends on the new Spider-man movie. Toby SM3 was awful, so that weighs into the original trilogy. Both of Holland's movies have been very good. They cap it off right, it's better imo overall.

Like what
Better effects, better writing, larger collections of actors who actively want to work in superhero films, more faithfulness to comic book costume designs/character origins/personalities. Lots of things, with the biggest just being this: studios and creators take comic book movies way more seriously now than they did back then.

Superhero films used to be these campy, goofy affairs that were marketed almost exclusively to kids/families for the main purpose of moving merchandise and making brand deals with McDonald's and the like, which is why Batman Returns got such a huge blowback when it released. It was so dark and so disturbing that kids and parents hated it. Now, we have serious filmmakers and writers legitimately exploring the more 'grown-up' side of the characters.

Tony Stark struggles with alcoholism and crushing guilt that leads him to make mistake after mistake trying to repent for his past deeds. Steve Rogers has to face the reality that the patriotism he used to believe in means something different in an increasingly-secretive, controlling world--plus he has to contend with the things he left behind, the people he never saw again, the familiar life he gave up in defense of innocent lives.

Spider-Man and X-men really started to dig maturely into themes like that, but the writing was never quite 'there' to make the stories feel real. Nowadays, with so much talent actively looking to take part in comic book films, we get masterpiece shit like The Dark Knight, Logan, and Joker. Really somber, character-driven films that focus way more on the thoughts, feelings, and motives of characters instead of just their super powers.
