Robot Chozo Warrior. I looked it up, I was doing the fight correctly, it's just it doesn't feel like missiles or charge shots do anything but apparently they do. So I'll try the fight again in an hour or so.

Not a big fan of it so far. They really ruined the exploration aspect. They're either blocking off routes behind you to prevent backtracking, or forcing you to rush through areas because of the EMMI's. It feels a bit too linear. They made a nice big map, but force you to play through it how they want.

Some sequence breaking is possible, such as getting the Grapple Beam or Gravity Suit early, and it's possible to do an any% speed run in under 1:50. However, on the scale of linearity from Fusion to Zero Mission, Dread is just left of Super. If you don't sequence break, those limitations against backtracking or to exploring at your own pace (because of EMMI pursuits) will be felt.

I see what I need to do, but how to actually do it I don't know. Like an energy quarter in western Ferenia where I have to use shinespark to get it, but I can't see any way to build up said shinespark, or carry it over from another close by room. So I must be missing something.

I don't know the exact one you are talking about, but you can wall jump and slide while boosting, without needing to store a shine. Also, while in shine you can morphball, spin jump, and slopes reset your boost (just like in Zero Mission). Once you know all that, you can figure out pretty much all of the shinespark puzzles.

Telling you where to go doesn't actually affect how linear the game is. It's a very open game that appears extremely linear if you follow the steps laid out for you.

Zero Mission has sequence breaks built in. You can get the Varia Suit without leaving Brinstar. You can kill Kraid without setting foot in Norfair. You can kill Ridley before Kraid. You CAN just follow the statues, but you definitely don't have to.

Right. Those objective markers are suggestions as to where to go, not the end of a railroaded path like in Fusion, Other M, or Prime 3. You can explore and find items at your leisure, and use tricks, even non-glitch ones, to get stuff before you're "meant" to, like in Super or Dread.

I really wanna get it but am pretty strapped for cash until some school grants come in. I only just found out about AM2R, so I'm scratching my itch with that for now. I'm so happy it actually has good custom control options. I can use my SNS30pro+ and actually have the A + B buttons mapped properly and graphically represented properly on screen. Also have a Zero Mission cart I can rip.

I wasn't crazy about AM2R. I think I just don't like Metroid 2 in general. Any version of it I've idk just doesn't do it for me. Also when I get to the end of AM2R it kept breaking in spectacular ways. I had to redo the final sections of the game multiple times because things kept breaking like geometry detection, or the camera would get stuck, or the final boss just wasn't killable even though I knew I was doing the fight right. And this was the initial release too, the version everyone says to play.

It reminds me of when Auric kept having issues with Byakko Ex during the cyclone dodging phase, and no one else in our group would be crashing to the one thing. Computers, dude. They're weird.

The fundamental issue with Metroid 2 is you're fighting the same boss repeatedly, as the core of the game. It's a questionable design decision from the Gameboy classic, that can't really be removed without changing the whole nature of the game.
