Reminds me of literally every generation ever since the original Xbox. Microsoft gouges with proprietary BS hardware.

1 TB Xbox SSD: $220
1 TB Gen 4 PS5-compatible SSD: $~120
Pretty soon you'll be able to get a 2 TB SSD for cheaper than the Xbox's 1 TB option

This is how Microsoft gets you. And don't kid yourself - GamePass is a trojan horse for BS coming down the line. They're gonna make their money eventually. These are the guys who made you buy a DVD remote for the original Xbox just to watch DVD movies. These are the guys who loaded the Xbox One launch titles with so many microtransactions, you could literally buy every single item in Forza and Ryse via the online store.

But on a side note, the Halo Infinite beta felt incredible.

For the same reason you couldn't with the Xbox 360, and the same reason the Xbox One couldn't be changed at all without screwing with your system's internals.

As opposed to the PS3, PS4 and PS5 that all support PC hard drives officially.

You can, but it's more of a hacky workaround than officially supported. And you're still somewhat limited in which ones you can use.

PS5 still has limits on which ones you can use, but it's based on performance rather than a whitelist. PS3 and PS4 were "literally any SATA drive that can physically fit. Or even ones that can't, if you use an extension cable of some kind and put the drive outside the console". (Actually I think there was an upper size limit - I have a feeling it was 2TB for PS3 and 4TB for PS4 - but that's again about specs, not specific individual devices.) The physical size thing does limit you to a 2TB drive at the moment, unless you use workarounds or buy a very large SATA SSD (which is very expensive for the use case).

Wow that sucks.

And I'm clueless when it comes to consoles, I'm a PC Gamer all the way.

Generally speaking, as long as it's Gen 4 it'll work. Digital Foundry tested a Gen 4 that didn't even meet the spec requirements and it actually was slightly FASTER than internal storage.

The funny thing is that you CAN actually do this, if I'm not mistaken.

Like, no way you're allowed to use a SSD that might be slightly slower than the official ones, still using the fast-ass PCIe4 connection... but you wanna hook up and use a slow-ass HDD over USB, go for it!

On PS5, external drives support PS4 games for storage and playing. But PS5 games can only be stored on them, not played. Which I guess is OK if it's an external SSD because you can transfer back and forth between main storage pretty quickly.

I wouldn't play off an ex-hdd. I'd just use it for storage and rearranging my cycle of games I'm playing.

Well

I don't have a plug in SSD and don't foresee a future where I'll need one

I also don't subscribe to Gamepass, because my interest in games is pretty narrow and I just buy the few games I want

It's the same with Xbox, you can store anything on external drives, but Series games can only be played on internal or the expansion card.

And if SSD prices for PS5 have come down that far (although I have never seen one as low as $120, is that with the heatsink or whatever?), the Series X expansion card will drop in price, too. It's already been on sale for as low as $180 at least.

The bottom is so much lower with standard PC components than Microsoft's options, though.

Yes, and they were right to do so. As they are for doing the same to MS now.

"SSD prices for PS5" are just "PCIe 4 SSD prices" (supposedly subject to some limitations around specs, though DarkRoast suggests that the limitations aren't enforced). You can just buy whatever one you like from a PC parts store and stick it in, you don't have to buy "the PS5 one". If you have a PC with a larger one and decide you need the space on the PS5 more, you could even literally swap the SSDs between the two (you'd have to wipe both, but you could use them).
