You mean those story games that use footage of real people?

Probably because they use footage of real people and I don't care about that.

People are tired of reboots, different universes' etc making it hard to follow.

Manga tend to finish. They have a beginning, a middle, and an ending.

This is not why it is. The reason is that the comic book industry has allowed itself to be sequestered into mom and pop comic shops instead of having the titles readily available in a big store and at a reasonable price.

although for a supe comic that has beginning and end I guess Invincible counts. You can pretty much read it from beginning to end. Mark does end up in some other comics like the Guardians of the Globe iirc but isn't needed. Kinda filler stuff

Because their promotion is kinda poor, I suppose? Theres also the conception that you cant really start a comic from issue 1. You dont know whats canon, or if it all is. There are too many crossovers, and comics outright point to others to read, like imagine Wolverine #13 saying To know more about these random heroes, read Iron Man #34. Its tedious.

It feels like you cant just break in, thats why I imagine they get less attention. This is ignoring the quality of writing or art of comics, which may also be a problem to many.

The way I spoke was mostly about superhero stuff, but as for others, we get back to the original point. Theres a lack of promotion, what would cause someone in the U.S. to find out about and read Maus? The superhero stuff being so prevalent and powerful, relatively, makes other interesting stuff less able to be found.

Not necessarily indie.

I mean, a lot of manga is pretty niche as well, but you still see people talking about them and posting new chapters online to discuss.

tbf i think part of the appeal of manga are the perverted tropes. i can understand why a lot of people are into them more than graphic novels that don't have them as often.

i do prefer manga over graphic novels overall

This. From what I've seen a lot of US indie stuff tends to not have art styles that are as blatantly appealing as most manga.

idk man i find some graphic novels pretty good even compared to manga. popularity doesn't always imply good quality.

hell a lot of my fave mangas aren't even that popular. like "Arigatou".

I think it's part of a greater problem in the west.

We'll watch an anime where a sword-wielding skateboarder and his talking cat sidekick take on an army of demon robots, but we look at western comics and argue that we like them for the gritty implications and not the more imaginative material.

When it comes to science fiction and fantasy, I think we like foreign properties more that domestic ones because it allows us to project the enjoyment of that content onto other cultures instead of admitting we're into it ourselves. It's like the equivalent of someone saying, "My best friend Bobby is a total nerd." If their interests make them a nerd, and you share the same interests, what does that make you?

I guess it depends on what outlets I frequent, but I hardly ever see manga talked about on the net except here, for the most part. The western comic sites I visit contain way less articles about manga. Even my real life friends don't talk about manga, at all. We just discuss comics, so this topic is the other way around for us.

Western comics/graphic novels aren't promoted in the west like manga is in Japan. Plus a lot of manga will be in weekly or monthly serializations with a bunch of other titles so you can pick up a huge book that'll have 10-20 different works for about $5. Compare that to the west where all titles are sold independent of each other with no real consistent release schedule and it's hard to just stumble upon different titles that you might otherwise not have heard of.

This definitely makes the most sense, and it's also a bit sad with all the Western artists or aspiring artists who will likely never get their works off the ground because they just don't get much attention to begin with.

Plus, I guess there's also the stigma of comics in general in the West thanks to Marvel/DC.

Graphic novels aren't really the same thing as manga. A western graphic novel in most cases of released either all at once or in only a very short run usually starting and finishing in a year or less and then later compiled. Manga is more similar to the western TPBs.

Funny as it sounds Graphic novels have more in common with doujinshi than manga.
