This. Also nobody gives a shit about comic books anymore, even with DC/Marvel movies being popular.

It isn't bold or brave.

I agree, it's not meant to be. 3.5% of the population identify as gay/lesbian/bi so 3.5% of media characters should also be. Representation matters. Eventually it won't even be news when things like this happen. We have a way to go to get there, but we will.

Also did DC even say that this was bold or brave? The closest thing I can find is a quote saying that it would be a wasted opportunity if the new Superman was another white straight savior.

Also, Dean Cain is a washed up has-been whose only notable traits these days are spewing bigotry and starring in crappy straight-to-dvd movies.

Except this new character being bisexual doesn't prevent him from doing anything Cain brings up. Like at all.

Cain's argument would boil down to DC comics should spoil storylines. Which would be an incredibly stupid way to run a business.

They said its a bold new direction, I say theyre bandwagoning, the 55-year-old actor told Fox & Friends on Tuesday. Robin just came out as bi whos really shocked about that one? The new Captain America is gay. My daughter in [The CW series] Supergirl, where I played the father, was gay. So I dont think its bold or brave or some crazy new direction. If they had done this 20 years ago, perhaps that would be bold or brave.

Brave would be having him fighting for the rights of gay people in Iran where theyll throw you off a building for the offense of being gay, Cain continued. Theyre talking about having him fight climate change and the deportation of refugees, and hes dating a hacktivist whatever a hactivist is. Why dont they have him fight the injustices that created the refugees whose deportation hes protesting? That would be brave, Id read that. Or fighting for the rights of women to attend school and have the ability to work and live and boys not to be raped by men under the new warm and fuzzy Taliban that would be brave. Theres real evil in this world today, real corruption and government overreach, plenty of things to fight against. Human trafficking real and actual slavery going on. Itd be great to tackle those issues.

I think there is a valid point in there... somewhere, in the midst of the crazy. A lot of this stuff is just bandwagoning on trails other people already blazed. DC is only doing this now because it's a safe way to grab headlines.

What makes Dean Cain assume this Superman will never fight the Taliban or help people in other 3rd world countries? He acts like it's never going to happen even though Superman has a history of doing stuff like that. Like most actors of comic inspired shows, I have a feeling Dean Cain doesn't even read comics himself

Well for one thing, this isn't Clark but his son, Jon, who was a kid for a long period of time. Coming out as bi or gay wouldn't be considered any form of changing the character.

Okay. What's the bold new direction? Did they say that him being bi is the bold new direction or are they actually doing something unique and not spoiling it? Because that blurb is milquetoast PR that sounds like every new tv show/comic/movie blurb.

It's the complete opposite of that.

Just up and making the current Clark Kent gay and retconning everything in his past would be lazy. Making a new alternate Clark Kent would be cowardly.

Taking a currently beloved and new character like Jonathan Kent and having him come out? I think it's a good idea, and certainly a risky one with him taking over Superman's spot.
