Honestly I think it is because the king is dead but it isn't specified directly. Thats my interpretation because in the drawings the king looks like a ghost.

When I was in 2nd grade my teacher would give us a treat every week like gummy worms, marshmallows, cookies.... every week she'd give us something different but she also had us write a story that involved what she gave us and then we had to read it to the class.
