Given that that's not at all what the word "next" means, I don't understand how this parlance makes any sense or became so commonplace.

The proper way to say the 23rd would be "the Saturday after next" or "a week from Saturday" or something like that.

Context. The same way people know what "15 after" means.

I thought this too for a second.

Then realized "next Saturday" could never mean the Saturday coming up directly. You would only refer to that day as "Saturday" or "this Saturday".

Because "this" is shorthand for "this upcoming"

Look, I don't feel like rationalizing my position anymore, I had really bad diarrhea this morning and I've been tired and miserable all day, and any time I'm told something is "this/next [day of the week]" I'll confirm what the actual date is anyway

you mean the same way that - "in context" - "next" being relative to "this" is an absolute given to anybody who isn't a completely pedantic moron

yeah, dude, i wouldn't feel like "rationalizing my position anymore" either if it was stupid af too

-

thanks for being the reason that people have to confirm the date exactly, though

really makes it convenient for the rest of us who have common sense

Say you had a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. You made the appointment the day before on Monday and had to tell your boss.

Would you say, "I have an appointment next Tuesday", or say, "I have an appointment this Tuesday"?
