Why do people do this?

its the same as saying "I'm going to go on a diet"

simply saying it triggers a reaction in the brain where it makes the person feel like they got something done. This can often lead to them forgetting the actual task, because in their mind, they've already put in work.

my old boss was the worst for this. She'd demand i stay late after work, for free, to do hours-long projects because she forgot to email me at 10am. I never stayed once, and fuck them. they did 1 million in sales a month, they can afford to pay me.
