I've lost nearly 60 pounds by eating garbage, just less garbage than I used to.

Fried chicken isn't worth it though. Just way too many calories.

In theory if you are keto and just get the grilled chicken that might be under the carb limit.

Otherwise no.

I'll occasionally eat it in my deficit, I typically just have chicken. I cut out fries and soda with sugar

The best dieticians will tell you that if you have a strong craving, just go for it and don't look back. Don't try to make up for it or punish yourself at all, it'll create a bad association with food.

Just eat it, enjoy and don't worry about it.
Sounds good.

Correct.

Food "rules" can be a problem too because if you make it a strict rule to not eat carbs but one day you do, then you might justify it to yourself that you've failed the whole thing and abandon it completely.

As long as you average under your weekly maintenance calories then you won't gain weight.

Heres the thing though, lets say you're at a 35% maintenance 5 days a week and then refeed at maintenance on sat/sun, you will lose the same amount of fat as someone who stays at 25% deficit 7 days a week.

However..

Even though the fat loss is equated, a person who stays in the same deficit every day (without a carb cheat day/refeed) will lose fat free mass and experience a slowing of the resting metabolic rate. This is the key problem with a strict keto/intermittent fasting diet, over time your muscle will deplete and your metabolism will crash, I've experienced this multiple times.

I thought calorie restriction caused reduced metabolism whereas IF does not.

I keep hearing conflicting accounts about what actually reduces metabolism and what doesn't. :v I wanna know the truth.

I feel like step one of any diet should be completely cutting out fast food. If you can't do that, it doesn't really inspire confidence in you.

Any improvement is a positive. Fast food may not help, but being totally demoralized doesn't help either Nobody changes all thier habits overnight. Progress is progress is good.

Our resting metabolic rate is directly related to fat free mass, if you deplete your fat free mass by eating too few carbs your metabolism will slow down.

True. I don't think I really said anything super harsh tho.

Yeah. Balance is the most important. But cutting fast food just seems like the way to go to be healthier. Just learn to cook some chicken and do some really simple sides. Save money and save yourself from feeling more sluggish
