A 48 y/o unidentified Michigan man was killed after he was pulled into a woodchipper by his JACKET!!

He was pulled into the chipper by his jacket after it got caught on a branch going into the machine as every indication pointed to his jacket being caught on a branch that was being fed into the chipper said Deputy Cheif Curt Lawson

The man was part of a crew of 3 working on a private residence in West Bloomingfield after police got a call stating his co worker is stuck inside of a woodchipper

They were able to apply first aid and a tourniquet o him as he was out of consciousness until paramedics arrived

They transported him to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The West Bloomingfield Police Dept and Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration are now investigating

Police said it was like a "tragedy" for everyone including his officers who witnessed the scene who are now provided MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING.

He told Fox 2 "It's something you can't prepare yourself for and those officers you know we have a peer support program here. We have individuals for them to talk to because we have to make sure our officers' mental health is a priority for us"

Would you ever work this kind of job?

Woodchippers scare the hell out of me. I don't know how powerful they really are but fatalities are pretty likely, even if it doesn't actually turn you into puree.

apparently being woodchipper'd (or mulched in another way, like if you get stuck in a meat grinder) is the absolute most painful way to be injured since the multitude of progressive shocks to your system don't engage your pain shutoff the way a much larger single-shot injury would

I don't want to think about this, it's like getting an Agony Matrix from Darkseid.

It's really horrid.

There's a true story from Africa where Dr. Livingston was mauled by a lion and he didn't feel pain... just a cold calm, because the injury triggered the pain shutoff response. (here's more of the story: https://www.thenational.scot/news/17510066.birth-legend-remembering-scotlands-famed-explorer/ )

https://tellingthestoryproject.org/ has all kinds of stories of horrific farm accidents.

Of course, the hydrant was on the other side of the blower, so I reached for it - putting my foot on the edge of the blower to balance myself. BAM. I was on my back on the ground with my leg in the blower.

I find that difficult to believe given how thoroughly and quickly you'd be sliced, and the fact that people are likely to fall in head first.

Considering he was working with several other people, it's surprising since there were literally several people who should have been witnesses or could at least give a name.

The authorities know who he is. They just choose not to identify him for the news article. I mean, the workers were trying to use a tourniquet to staunch the blood flow. This would not make sense if he was turned into mush, nor would transporting him to the hospital. Most likely he got his arm caught in the thing and completely lost it then bled to death.

I've used a wood chipper for cleaning up stuff at my parents house and I've used one we have at work here. We did end up selling the one at work two years ago because it wasn't getting utilized enough to justify having it though.

It's definitely one of those things that you don't want to have loose fitting clothes on while you're working it and ideally one of the other laborers will be near the shutoff switch if something does go wrong. Rough way to go.
