Basically stating that social media apps dont have a bias against conservatives. Its just more likely for a conservative to post something offensive or a flat out lie/misinformation.

to the surprise of no one really.

We've seen the same thing here for years. Conservatives would cry about their viewpoints being silenced, and how we have left leaning liberal bias agenda in our content moderation system. Turns out you guys just believe in grotesquely stupid and obscene things, so they get deleted. Fancy that.

Full pdf, interesting read:
https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3479610

It's a bit qualitative but it doesn't seem like bad faith science.

Most of reading the details just reminds you that social media is a cesspool, and nobody wins.

Conservatives: Conservative viewpoints are being silenced on social media!!!
  • Which viewpoints? Small government? Lower taxes? Pro-life?
Conservatives: Well no, not those viewpoints.
  • Privatization of public services? Deregulation?
Conservatives: No, not those, either.

I don't think that is the conclusion to reach from this.

I think the most apt conclusion is that conservatives are more likely to be moderated but for reasons that seem to be in keeping with the site's policies according to the paper. One could still make the argument of such policies themselves have a liberal bias in definition or implementation.

But I'm not looking to make an argument, it's an interesting paper with interesting data.

If one is making the argument that being against misinformation is a liberal thing, then they need to really take a long look in the mirror.

It seems like people should be able to post lies if they want to. I could see the topic being relevant with COVID, but otherwise, just let stupid people do stupid things.

If one is making the argument that being against misinformation is a liberal thing, then they need to really take a long look in the mirror.

It's not about being against misinformation, everybody reasonable is against misinformation.

It's about being against "misinformation", which is yes more of a liberal thing.

The difference between misinformation the concept and "misinformation" the term in implementation is that the latter can be used to censor true things.

https://www.politifact.com/li-meng-yan-fact-check/
September 2020 politifact said:
Our ruling
During an interview on Fox News, Yan said the coronavirus "is a man-made virus created in the lab."
The genetic structure of the novel coronavirus, which has been shared by thousands of scientists worldwide, rules out the possibility that it was manipulated in a lab. Public health authorities have repeatedly said the virus was not created in a lab. Scientists believe the coronavirus originated in bats before jumping to humans. Experts have publicly rebuked Yans paper, and its unclear whether it was peer reviewed.
The claim is inaccurate and ridiculous. We rate it Pants on Fire!

Politifact maintains that "Pants on Fire" is their lowest rated level of true. Meaning that they are incredibly confident the statement is egregiously and ridiculously false.

Now that "fact" on politifact contains the following editors note:
Editors note, May 17, 2021:When this fact-check was first published in September 2020, PolitiFacts sources included researchers who asserted the SARS-CoV-2 virus could not have been manipulated. That assertion is now more widely disputed. For that reason, we are removing this fact-check from our database pending a more thorough review. Currently, we consider the claim to be unsupported by evidence and in dispute. The original fact-check in its entirety is preserved below for transparency and archival purposes. Read our May 2021 report for more on the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19.
