so3 is still one of my favorite games of all time

everything being a game doesn't make the plot any less high stakes for me, because their reality is their reality no matter what form it takes. i don't care if everything "isn't real", i'm playing a video game to begin with

As someone whos never played a Star Ocean game it is an absolutely fascinating series to watch from the sidelines. It seems like 2, while fairly well received, was very much a right place, right time game being a non-Final Fantasy alternative during the JRPG boom. Then from the ending of 3 on people have gotten increasingly sour on that series and each sequel seems to kill the series off for real yet Star Ocean refuses to die. It is to the point where one has to ask who these games are actually for.

Star Ocean 3 vs. Tales of Symphonia was a big debate on B8 in 2003

but then the hipsters on B8 were like nah son it's Shadow Hearts: Covenant

I didn't even get to the twist in so3

I was all hyped for a science fiction rpg, but the game immediately has you crash land on the most generic fantasy world and kill generic fantasy enemies for hours and hours

It is just a bad game

But you missed Nel. She's like the only good thing about that world...and the game. Maybe Cliff.

*Knows people are gonna say Albel. Crispin Freeman voice aside, he sucks. Albedo was 100 times more fleshed out as "Crispin plays the crazy" goes.*

Would have rather had Clair playable and have her and Nel tag team the battlefield.

Star Ocean 3 is a fun game. Even moreso than SO2, it works best if you turn your brain off and just focus on 100 percenting the maps and getting high ranks on the battles. I had a blast playing it at the time. I do think Symphonia is probably better overall, but there's a case to be made that SO3 has a better battle system and is therefore more fun. Even I - a noted Symphonia dis-liker- has to admit that their characters are better than SO3's (with the exception of Nel, who's actually pretty good).

I gave the game an honest chance- I was just on that planet for so long! Trapped in there with anime tropes and inscrutable cooking systems...

Maybe I'll look up a curated playthrough or cutscene compilation someday

Yeah that's fair.

I think it was just a disconnect between what i was looking for (a heavily story driven space final fantasy) and what I was getting (a chill grinding experience)

I shouldn't call it bad, it was just not what I was looking for

SO3 suffers from having one of the worst dubs in any game. Everyone sounds terrible, and not in the "so bad it's good" way they sounded terrible in SO2...

I liked the game less for it's gameplay and more for the stuff tucked away in the margins.

The music was pretty good (back when Sakuraba actually seemed to care). The invention and inventor system was nice...save for the Persona Fusion skill grab BS random money shit.

SO3 was like Breath of Fire 3. Good at a lot of things, but no one is saying it is JRPG royalty.

But the plot twist ruined every shred of "it's fine" and then you notice the holes it had and stop forgiving it.

The best thing about the Star Ocean series has always been the sound effects. Especially the menus.

And that's not some sleight, I legitimately mean that, I think SO has the best extraneous sound effects in video games.

Also, I'm not going to sit here and say Tales is anything magical either. Their visuals and animation were pretty lackluster until Arise said "We got this". Kinda Ys or Trails level "generation behind the curve" like most non FF stuff.

Beseria just had Velvet kick you in the face over and over and then forcefeed you your ass and ask for seconds. Star Ocean never had a character that good...they had "Edge Maverick"

I mean, Arche apparently fucks like a tiger too.". So I guess Arche is great too.

Based on the first two games, this seems to possibly be the series' MO. Bait people in with the scifi stuff and the promise of the title "Star Ocean" conveying epic, possibly intergalactic scope; then stick you on a generic fantasy planet with anime tropes for like half the game at least.

Maria's fine, but when she shows up, she steals all the cutscenes time in a "LOOK AT ME I AM SUPER IMPORTANT" kind of bitchfest way until they get her story told. After that, she is less insufferable, cause they go back to focusing on the whole party.

I get wanting to introduce characters, but holy crap.

You sure? Cause I remember Arche dreaming of fucking the main character (sleep fucking?), then later on the other male party member utters the line.

It must have only been in an English translation patch. Cause I would never forget a character dreaming of having sex within earshot of the party....

from what I understand, it was a dream about eating.

although it's supposed to be kind of suggestive/a double entendre, since commenting on how full their stomach feels now is like a generic post sex pron line. Also probably something freudian too.

and the idea that characters that are lazy/gluttonous are also very horny (trying to spin it as them having strong primal instincts organisms need for survival, for food/rest/reproduction to propogate the species) is fairly common in animu even when it isn't directly stated by one of the characters.

The translation isn't really unfounded it just takes it to Family Guy "So they have something to look at when you're talking to them. *pause* So they have something to look at when you're talking to them. *pause* So they have something to look at when you're talking to them." territory.

SO: Till the End of Time is a solid 8/10 good game, particularly given its release during the heydey of the ps1 jrpg renaissance. It's clearly a step below the top tier mainline FF's, Xenogears, Wild Arms, and Suikoden 1&2, but I'd argue it's on par /debatably better than Breath of Fire III, Tales of Eternia, the Mana games and Persona 1/2.
