If your account is old enough, you can fuck up severely more than a dozen times without getting banned. You can't post for a few months, sure, but something that would warrant more severe action from a 2018 account only results in a long suspension for a 2003 account. You can have a proven track record of being an asshole, and a long mod history consisting of offensive posts and blatant troll posts, but given that your karma is roughly around 2500, you're going to get a lot of second chances. It's like what happened with the Admiral. That guy never changed his stripes - he was a conservative shitposter for years, pushing conservative nonsense whenever he posted. He only got banned some time in the past two years, because after suspension after suspension - like our mutual acquaintance toyota - he kept coming back with the same provocative takes to "trigger the libs". And even now, the fact that a former mod was banned at all feels like a fucking miracle. I get that these older legacy accounts have put a lot of time into their accounts, and to throw all that away is seen as a big deal. But rather than giving these old accounts chance after chance after chance that they keep squandering to annoy other people, we should be more proactive. Rather than keeping these high-karma accounts around on months-long suspensions, why not make an inquiry into how much their moderation history has changed when they're past a certain threshold of moderation? Like a "tiger doesn't change its stripes" thing. Weigh an account's moderations past a certain point. Have the past 5 moderations been "offensive material" moderations, and have they all been about trans people? Consider stronger action against older accounts whose moderation history constitutes a pattern. Something other than exiling them for long stretches of time, only for them to come back and post the same dumb horseshit that gets them exiled again a week later. Because it's really disheartening to see these 3000+ karma accounts get chance after chance, when their abrasive style of posting doesn't change. When was the last time toyota wasn't an intentionally provocative shitposter? Aside from his intentionally provocative takes and (presumably) any ad revenue his activity generates for the site, when was the last time he offered the community anything other than scorn and derision? At what point did The Admiral cross the line to finally get banned? Because while it was a welcome decision, his eventual ban felt arbitrary. It didn't feel like he had overstepped the line significantly more than he was already doing, he just posted one too many moddable messages after over a decade of posting, after a series of superfluous second chances - and the particular post that got him banned, after plenty of posts in the same vein that were spread over the course of years, was only notable to the extent that it was the one that finally got him axed. When a user has chance after chance after chance to chill the fuck out and follow the rules, and continues to get moderated for the same calibre of posting they've engaged in for years, why even bother with the 90 day suspensions? Why continue to give them more chances when they keep sticking their finger in the same sore spot for fun, like they've always done? If a user is known for being bad news, and has a list of suspensions longer than my arm, why should it matter if that account is from 2003 or 2021? Obviously the more recent one is a throwaway designed to cause as much damage with the smallest effect on the main account as possible, so it's understandable that the website would get rid of those worker bees as fast as possible. But why continue to extend the same courtesy to legacy accounts who keep getting moderated for garbage troll posts that appeal to the lowest common denominator of trolls on this website? Have the past 5 moderations been "offensive material" moderations, and have they all been about trans people? Consider stronger action against older accounts whose moderation history constitutes a pattern. Something other than exiling them for long stretches of time, only for them to come back and post the same dumb horseshit that gets them exiled again a week later. Because it's really disheartening to see these 3000+ karma accounts get chance after chance, when their abrasive style of posting doesn't change. When was the last time toyota wasn't an intentionally provocative shitposter? Aside from his intentionally provocative takes and (presumably) any ad revenue his activity generates for the site, when was the last time he offered the community anything other than scorn and derision? At what point did The Admiral cross the line to finally get banned? Because while it was a welcome decision, his eventual ban felt arbitrary. It didn't feel like he had overstepped the line significantly more than he was already doing, he just posted one too many moddable messages after over a decade of posting, after a series of superfluous second chances - and the particular post that got him banned, after plenty of posts in the same vein that were spread over the course of years, was only notable to the extent that it was the one that finally got him axed. When a user has chance after chance after chance to chill the fuck out and follow the rules, and continues to get moderated for the same calibre of posting they've engaged in for years, why even bother with the 90 day suspensions? Why continue to give them more chances when they keep sticking their finger in the same sore spot for fun, like they've always done? If a user is known for being bad news, and has a list of suspensions longer than my arm, why should it matter if that account is from 2003 or 2021? Obviously the more recent one is a throwaway designed to cause as much damage with the smallest effect on the main account as possible, so it's understandable that the website would get rid of those worker bees as fast as possible. But why continue to extend the same courtesy to legacy accounts who keep getting moderated for garbage troll posts that appeal to the lowest common denominator of trolls on this website? You can't post for a few months, sure, but something that would warrant more severe action from a 2018 account only results in a long suspension for a 2003 account. You can have a proven track record of being an asshole, and a long mod history consisting of offensive posts and blatant troll posts, but given that your karma is roughly around 2500, you're going to get a lot of second chances.
