I've got it all threaded up just like the manual shows, press the pedal and everything moves... Except the needle. It just drops and doesn't move, like an internal mechanism isn't grabbing it

There is a spindle hook below the plate. It has to be aligned just right to catch the thread.

The arm bracket is putting the needle where it needs though?

It's catching and will throw in a few stitches, but then the needle does down... Then not back up. Down, not back up. The arm that raises the needle won't raise it either I have to push it back up into the top of the machine

Yeah it will throw in a few stitches but then the arm that raises the needle will move as if it's sewing, and the needle holder seems to "fall" out of whatever is holding it and the arm no longer raises the needle

Are you using an air system? Could have a pressure issue.

Take apart or at least spray lube the arm. Not too much though.

The needle has a flat face where the set screw for it sits. That needs to be secure and aligned.

No.

Wish I still had my Grandmas old "Singer" though.

Had a foot pedal to move the needle and gold text on the thing.

It's not the needle that is falling though, it's the needle holder.

Like I'll turn the side knob to raise the needle, and it will not fully move the needle, it seems to skip

I'll try to take it all apart and inspect what you've mentioned though

I haven't used a sewing machine since home ec class in middle school.

Anything I sew I do my hand.
