https://www.latimes.com/sports/highschool/story/2021-10-30/morningside-reaction-inglewood-scoring-106-points

Inglewood (CA) Morningside football coach Brian Collins did not have kind words for the Inglewood High coaching staff on Saturday morning when discussing his teams 106-0 loss to the Sentinels in a game that saw Inglewood quarterback Justyn Martin throw 13 touchdowns passes, including a two-point conversion pass with a 104-0 lead.

It was a classless move, said Collins, a first-year head coach at Morningside. I told them, Go play St. John Bosco and Mater Dei.

Collins said he was proud of his players for not quitting. He said a running clock did not start until the second quarter despite attempts to switch to a running clock earlier. Inglewood led 59-0 after the first quarter.

The refs asked them to run the clock and they refused, Collins said.

Inglewood head coach MilVon James is in his third season. He was head coach at Hawkins in the City Section until being fired following the 2016 season when his team had to forfeit every victory for using ineligible players and the program was placed on two years probation for rules violations. He has seven players on this years team committed to major universities. All are transfer students.
James has not responded to an email seeking comment about the lopsided win.

Collins said he was surprised to see Martin, who committed to UCLA earlier in the week, play throughout.

I wouldnt do that to any team keep your quarterback commit to UCLA in until the end of the game, taking a chance with an injury, he said. It wasnt good sportsmanship.

Both schools are part of the Inglewood Unified School District. A statement released by the Southern Southern on Saturday condemns, in the strongest terms, results such as these.

The full statement reads: The CIF Southern Section expects that all athletic contests are to be conducted under the strictest code of good sportsmanship. We expect coaches, players, officials, administrators and students to adhere to the Six Pillars of Character Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. A score of 106-0 does not represent these ideals. The CIF-SS condemns, in the strongest terms, results such as these. It is our expectation that the Inglewood administration will work towards putting in place an action plan so that an event such as this does not repeat itself.

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable president Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a parent of a former Inglewood High student and former football player, urged CIF to formally sanction the Inglewood football coaching staff.

This isnt the first time a district team has come under scrutiny for running up a score.

In 1990, Morningsides Lisa Leslie scored 101 of her teams 102 points in the first half of a girls basketball game against South Torrance. South Torrance refused to come back out after halftime to finish the game. The final score was 102-24.

Collins said he will use the game as offseason motivation for his players. Morningside finishes the season 2-8. Inglewood is 8-0 and will play in the Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.
Im going to print out the score real big and put it in the weight room so they can see it every day and use it as positive reminder, Collins said.

Normally there's a 45 point rule but these school's are in a league that's the state's equivalent of the heavyweight division and there's no limit.

Fucking ridiculous that liberal paradise California doesn't have a "mercy" rule in effect. Also fucking ridiculous that "Six Pillars of Character" only applies to the winning coach, and not the losing coach. The loser should have forfeited that game halfway through to keep his clearly overmatched highschoolers from potentially getting hurt. Where is his "responsibility" and "caring"?

He seems like a shit coach and hopefully he isn't back for another year. The only thing that matters in sports is winning. Have some humility to know when you're beat.

How is such an uneven matchup possible? Does one school have way more students than the other or something?

That's pretty trashy of the winning school.

But also fuck the losing coach for not forfeiting at halftime.

But also also fuck that district for allowing such an uneven matchup in the first place.

Usually the more students you have, the bigger talent pool you have to make a team. A school with 1,000 people per graduating class would destroy a team with 50 per class.

On one hand, do better.
On the other, at some point it's probably more long term beneficial to get your second/third string players some experience. Kudos for the losing team for playing the whole game though. With that, when losing is so definitive, wouldn't they also want their backup players in there to at least get practice.

A lot of divisions are based on the size of the school, and not necessarily the talent pool.

So youll have some untalented teams in those divisions simply because the kids there dont play.

This is LA my man. Also, not every school district has the same rules on what students can enroll in classes...Furthermore, a #1 NFL Draft pick CAN come out of some podunk town. Talent is talent regardless of size of sample.

The coach of the winning team (Inglewood) was busted and fired from another school 5 years ago for recruiting violations. The team he has this year has 7 out of district transfers, so expect some kind of investigation into a recruiting violation.

That area already puts a lot of kids into the NBA, WNBA, MLB and NFL as it is.

I do think generally resting your starters is better for you, but usually the coaches on the other side are just being excessively salty.

So if I was getting my shit pushed in like that I'd be all game for forfeiting at halftime, but I've never played sports competitively so maybe the kids on that team wanted to tough it out? But if the coach was making them go back out that's pretty crap.

In regards to those six values, I can see why a conversion kick would be seen as unsportsmanlike when the team making the conversion are up by over a hundred points. The score itself, with the team being better, isn't as much of an issue as the fact that a move like that is basically just gloating at that point. I get why it would be singled out as unsportsmanlike.

inb4 "participation trophies ruined sports" though
